Safe
Never has the term been imprinted on a generation’s minds in such a clarion call outside wartime (cold included, perhaps, at its most paranoid moments). Friends end their calls with a “stay safe” sign-off. It wouldn't have occurred as frequently pre-pandemic. You are urged to be safe, get safe or stay safe repeatedly in the nicest possible but urgent manner.

Referred reeferendum
In reference to a legal challenge to the cannabis referendum result.
A group of more than 350 people is asking the High Court to void the vote on the Cannabis and Control Bill, claiming poor and inaccurate information generated confusion among voters. -
The law is wrong. We saw the huge numbers lining up to buy legal highs and it looked like most of them formerly smoked weed. What we are currently doing is criminalising a large group of society for no reason. 52% of New Zealanders aged 15 – 45 admit to having used cannabis at some time, and 16% describe themselves as current users..
About the same amount of people will smoke weed if it is legalised as do now. Some like it. Others will try it, have a bad experience and never take it again, Just like they do now when it is illegal. It wasn’t like numbers of smokers increased with legal weed. The science says that less teens smoke it if it is legalised and 50-65 year-old males are more likely to increase consumption.
Justice and science, I reckon. -
I posted probably too many potential WOTY above and think of them all the term Ihumatao resonates most strongly. It no longer only denotes a geographic place, now also representing a movement and a new ideology in New Zealand and Maori public affairs.
This year the actions of the protectors at Ihumatao highlighted what to most seemed an obvious injustice and public sentiment drove local and central government leaders, Fletchers and iwi leaders to seek a new solution. We don't know what that is yet but we can be sure that last year the word Ihumatao was fairly unknown but is now firmly seated in the public consciousness, will be included in all official national histories and school children will be learning about Ihumatao in NZ history (whereas I think it has been mentioned broadly as Mangere mountain in most major histories to date). They may also learn about SOUL and Pania Newton, but it is the term Ihumatao that will always resonate. It's a strong word, distinctly Maori unlike Bastion Point. In the end, its the one that I think stands out to us as New Zealanders, more so than climate and other more global possibilities. -
