Stone Roses ......Classic 89
Not sure I have this embedd thing down pat ... but here goes
-
Now wait just a goddamned minute: 'Don't Dream It's Over' is a beautifully written song. It is. You can't let the overplayed MORness of it all blind you to its greatness. Plus Mitchell Froom ripped off the final organ figure from Elvis Costello's 'I'll Wear It Proudly', so even its stealing is awesome.
That being said, Bennett is my hero for today. I have been utterly obsessed with Aretha's 'Rock Steady' for the last few months, and to have it playing over a clip of Soul Train? Bliss. Complete bliss.
(Later, I will be defending disco. And the Philly Sound. Righto then.)
-
i'll also admit listening to the cure for an unnaturally long time after college...
so at least i was emo before emo was emo.
-
oh, puhleese let this work....

@Paul:
(that was in response to Robyn - disco was forced on us by all the media - BOTH radio stations when I was a teen - I was horrified a few years back when a baby sitter brought her disco oldies over to play - and she wasn't being ironic)
Neither am I!
'I feel Love', the standard version:
The freaky fast version which will make you gay:
And my personal favourite, the Patrick Cowley 12" mix. I have this record and I have dropped it at a dance party and felt the love come calling ...
-
some YMO...my favorite Japanese pop group.
-
(MIA, B52s, even some Tom Waits)
Happened to be in the car the other day, with 15 year old, listening to Nick Bollinger rate the Scarlett Johanson album (Tom Waitts covers, she hits a few of the notes now & then).
Afterwards Bollinger played a particularly inaccessible Waitts song so we could compare with the original - can't remember which, but the 15 year old's respnse (and she's an eclectic music fan I have to say) was. just. priceless.

Going through our house at the moment:
I know it's plebeian to enjoy Weezer, but they're So Damn Good. The lead singer, Rivers Cuomo, has YouTubers writing a song, showing them what he thinks and the order he works in. It's interesting, and he's definitely weird.

Sorry Che, there's no such thing as emo before emo. The word you're looking for, I'm afraid, is "Goth". Having spent every day of my 19th year listening to the first Sisters of Mercy album and the Swans' "Holy Money", I can recognise the condition. Won't scare anyone by linking to either band here ...
-
And Radiohead's "Nude" remixed by James Houston using mostly old electronic apparatus to provide the music.
-
was hoping to find 'the classical' or 'the north will rise again', but this version of a nz top 25 single is very very good.
-
Goddamnit. Let's try that again:
-
Grace Jones, Slaaaave to the Rhythm.
(And I suspect this won't embed, so click the link plz)
-
a personal fave 'wish i was there' moment...
-
Yes...it is reasonable to be appreciative of what the kids are up to...lest they let us know if they appreciate us.

Actually, I think the thing that blew my mind was Patti Smith's 'Because the Night' on Casey Kasem's American Top 40
Saved by Springsteen!
-
... kinda! ;-)
-
Oookayy...
Because it got a mention on an earlier thread....[and because it was the first time I ever heard a single and went 'I Must Have That Record Now' ]
-
And just to day I ran into this page explaining how that iconic Grace Jones Cover was created (pre-photoshop)

Way to rock out with your cock out, fellas. Here to complement:
Tori Amos
PJ Harvey
Patti Smith
Hole
-
...and because this is all getting just too tasteful - a HUGE hit from '76...:
-
'I Feel Love'
Fucking. A. That is mightily magnificent.
I'd like to share with all of you one of the most terrifyingly perky dance routines ever put on film, from Nancy Sinatra's TV special Movin' With Nancy (sponsored by RC Cola!). The madness starts at approximately one minute fifty-seven seconds, for those with little patience.

This is from an Aussie, Saturday morning show for teens. Only the JSBX could pull this off at 11am. Brilliant.
