I don't see how Labour continuing to run with the conspiracy theory of it all being a set-up by Warners is going to help.
Given the close ties between Labour and the CTU it might be better just to shut up. Having them both take such a destructive appraoch might not look all the great to the studios.
or maybe it's a cunning plan ot make Key look so reasonble and trustworthy the studios will accept a deal with him.

The weird thing is that it takes a grand total of 10 minutes work, looking at the 'Hobbit Factsheet' the MEAA first sent out to everyone (and is literally the first mention of all this on the AE website) to see all those issues plain as day.
The whole thing is really just so, so bizarre.
-
The fact sheet and accompanying letters should be compulsory reading by any journo about to interview anyone from NZAE. This is where it started, and everything since is just waffle.
-
You'd think it might be compulsory reading for AE members too. Like - maybe before they go out on TV trying to defend it all?
-
Govt and Warners are currently in their meeting:
Warners: How can we be certain that an actors strike won't hold up production?
Brownlee: Check out my new powers! If anyone from a union so much as farts in your direction I'll hunt them down and arrest them!
-
Hadn't seen the SPADA factsheet until I was searching for the MEAA one. Nice to have their perspective succinctly wrapped up as well.

Tweet from TV3 reporter Patrick Gower (patrickgowernz)
Simon Whipp finally fronts up to 3News tonight. @amandagTV3 asks: If Hobbit doesn't get made in NZ, will you carry any guilt? Whipp: "No".
and another from 3entertainment
CNN just had some Hobbit news on and labelled John Key the "managing director of WETA". God bless America.
-
To be fair, there is probably earlier communication over the previous two years between MEAA/NZAE and the producers and perhaps with SPADA (despite what's been said). Unravelling that could shed some light on the roots of recent misunderstandings and cock-ups.
-
Who would have predicted Key would emerge just in time for the 6pm bulletin..
-
Whipp: "No"

You'd certainly hope so. Maybe we could put it into the 'jumping to conclusions' pile, at least for the moment. Still, you'd think the MEAA factsheet would mention them if they existed, surely. I dunno - maybe they just didn't put the fact sheet together properly and implied something they didn't intend to?
And the moment it rather reads like: we've been trying to meet with local producers and SPADA, but they refused and therefore we're targeting the Hobbit...

Is Mallard fronting this for Labour some sort of signal to Warners that NZ has people like Whipp too so don't mess with us?
-
Congrats to Amanda Gillies. The money question, and the money quote.
-
More Whipp on Campbell Live, apparently.

Are you able to give details, Pat? Or a link?
-
So, Key speaks to TV3:
1. The film was "'good to go" before the boycott threat.
2. Therefore it wasn't about tax breaks.
3. So there will now be tax breaks.
That's the de-spinned version, anyway.
Congrats to Amanda Gillies. The money question, and the money quote.
When will anybody ask such questions to the Prime Minister? I know he's not actually in charge of our country, like Simon Whipp, but still ...
-
"So there will be now tax breaks."
Which was precisely what I thought the unlovely Key was saying when he said there would be "no bidding war."
Translated: "The government will do whatever you want except get into a bidding war."
-
I was talking about NZ films. Massive return on back end? Uh-uh.
Not even a modestly good one?
-
The only massive return on the back end I see is when I eat donuts. Straight to the butt, I tells ya...
-
@Deborah. Webweaver quoted it earlier:
Amanda Gillies: "If Hobbit doesn't get made in NZ, will you carry any guilt?"
Simon Whipp: "No".It will be on Campbell Live.
-
Thanks, Pat. And webweaver.
-
Danyl M has also been translating Key:

My take: There will be tax breaks, or worse - changes to employment law will be scribbled on the back of an envelope, and this wil be sold as "cheaper than tax breaks", therefore, "good".
-
Given the talk of the exchange rate, I wonder if the government might offer some sort of hedge assistance rather than a topup to the 15% headline rebate.
-

Translated: "The government will do whatever you want except get into a bidding war."Damn, I'm naive! But slowly becoming less so.

Speaking of matters financial, here's a tip: judging by what's being posted over at The Standard now, I think that the stocks of tinfoil manufacturers are looking very bullish. Apparently it's all a complicated jackup between "Jackson/Warners/Key/Brownlee" .
(Those slashes do not bring a pretty picture to mind...)
