Field Theory: Wellington, after dark

Damn. You were there too. I can't have been too far away from where you were standing although not as close to see the sneakers. How good was her band and Kelly Hogan was so cool. She's an integral part of Neko's sound. Time the Bathhouse got some decent ventilation/aircon though. Drove down from Napier then drove back after. Got home at 4! Next trip-Calexico in March.
Oh and if you are in Welly this weekend try and see the Tour de Trois-Flip Grater/Delany Davidson/ Mariane Dissard. Saw them tonight in Napier and it's an interesting combination. Davidson has a southern gothic thing going on and Dissard is French but lives in Tuscon and has recorded with Calexico. -
That's pretty committed but if I wasn't in Wellington I would've done the same. Heck, I was considering going again last night.

Heh, at the Bath House no one's that far away from each other :) I was right at the front in the middle. So I also got a good look at Jon Rauhouse on the pedal steel guitar. All night I was like "oh, that's what that sound is on the album!"

ah, you should have gone last night. Not so full, not too hot, fewer hardcore fans, but SO many converts... everyone was just totally there by the encore, for which they really pulled out the stops: John Saw That Number, Buckets of Rain (Dylan), Train from Kansas City (Shangri-Las).... They really had a ball and Kelly Hogan was magnificent. Best onstage banter I've seen for a very long time.
Weird though, to find out just beforehand that two guys were punching it out in the Al Green audience during the Opensouls support set. WTF?

so where's the thread where we can share some love with Al Green?
truly gutted by the state of 'take me to the river-nessless' and I'd happily have pulled the plug on the second keyboard player in the collared t-shirt and tie, but sheesh, the Reverend still has the pipes. And opening with L-O-V-E (Love) was a master stroke.
Haven't been that excited about a gig since James Brown at the St James.
dunno about the Opensouls soul set though - seemed more songwriting by numbers. and the drummer may need to check out some Booker T vids. Mate, leave the fullkit rolls for the Europe covers. Their funk track Turn It Up at the close seemed to fit them better.
couldn't see the fight from where we were, but one of the Opensouls horn players marnused them good and proper.

I was all convinced that he'd do 'Take Me to the River' as an encore, and then there was no encore! Horrors! (This morning's previous setlist research informed me that I shouldn't have expected either.) I would have loved 'Jesus is Waiting', too, but knew it would be unlikely.
However, he was generally fucking RAD. Swoon.

yeah, so was I. so much so, that I didn't really do much hollahing or even pay a hell of a lot of attention when he left the stage.
then they started dismantling the cymbal stands and my shoulders drooped a tad.
the group we'd been dancing in the aisle with just shrugged at each other and trudged their seperate ways...with smiles on but. -
3410,

Ray Davies a few years ago: Some doofus at the Civic turned on the house lights prematurely, denying us an encore that might have included - by my estimate - something like Celluloid Heroes and Waterloo Sunset.

I'll let you keep on with the Al Green but
ah, you should have gone last night.
I got my tickets (the first sold in Wellington, because, yes, I am a crazed fan) and then they announced the second show. And although I am the aforementioned crazed fan, I could not justify an extra $50 to see the second show... to my partner.
Here's the set list for the first night. Other than John Saw That Number and Furnace Room Lullaby (and Honky Tonk Hiccups) they played all my favourites
Now back to Al Green... WTF?

It's not the first time and probably won't be the last. Me and a concert going buddy have been doing the trip for a few years. As we get a bit older though we've started staying the night when we can. Luckily it's still the school holidays so I could recover.
So I also got a good look at Jon Rauhouse on the pedal steel guitar. All night I was like "oh, that's what that sound is on the album!"
I was like that with Kelly Hogan. Bits I thought Neko overdubbed on the records are actually Kelly singing.
You would have thought with the demand for tickets instead of a second show they could have moved to a bigger seated venue and had just one show. -
Phew!! I have found the Al Green thread (originally posted on Russell's thread where they are rabbiting on about cycling)

It being Friday arvo and all...
Back home, with my ears still ringing from the absolutely-bloody-fantastic Al Green concert at The Civic last night. I have declared to all and sundry that it is the very best concert I have ever been to--backed up the highly informed bloke at Marbeck's, who places it in his top 3. Indeed. the superb band and swooping voice of Al quite brought tears to my eyes. Great to see virtually half of the crowd up and dancing--but no encore (despite a standing ovation) and no Belle!!
So what did you think of it, Danielle?

The eyewitness report I heard was that one inebriated munter was calling for Opensouls to pack up and finish and a neighbouring munter took exception and a scuffle resulted, with a drunken girlfriend weighing in.
Personally, I think the Opensouls went on for rather too long. The lead vocalists just didn't have enough colour or range to carry the songs (even though she had volume). -

Must admit I'm a convert. Hadyn makes me listen to her studio recordings all. the. time. And I never liked them much - too country and a bit nasaly. BUT her live performance was amazing, better than recorded. It's so refreshing to see performers who are truly talented.
Also, have you seen Whip It? Great movie, love Juliette Lewis. Hope the Auckland derby girls do a great exhibition bout.

Why did they omit Lou Vincent?
-
Because they went with Ingram?
