I’ll disagree slightly with you Amy in that people watch sport for a variety of reasons, to make out like there’s only one reason is a bit presumptuous.
Well if you disagree you can easily test this by not watching the last ten minutes of any game. See if you still enjoy watching competition if you can never know the outcome :-)

People don’t watch sports for the quality (i guess you mean skill) of participants. They watch it to see who wins. Horse racing has a huge audience yet they don’t show greater skill at running a distance than other animals and humans.
An exciting game is where teams or individuals are closely matched and have a lot at stake. The audience is excited because they predict the outcome at the beginning of the game and remain excited while the outcome is precarious.
The audience is not really interested in the skill or display – the outcome is the most important thing. No one is going to watch a game if they can’t know the end result.
People don’t watch sport just to see displays of skill and games displaying less skill are not necessarily less interesting. And so you can’t say the lack or support for women’s teams is because of a difference in quality. -
it's rough being the only team in town. I used to play in Wellington's only female Gaelic football team. We trained with the lads or amongst ourselves and our first tournament in Auckland against other teams was strange. But we won the tournament!

the high number of penalties should settle down as the teams adjust to the new rule interpretations, and the referees let their line in the sand loosen a little once it's been made.
Let's hope so - it makes it very frustrating to watch the games.

No reliable evidence of a conspiracy has ever been uncovered.
Are you kidding me? It's a pretty well accepted fact that in the lead up to the final a betting syndicate and SA rugby officials conspired to diminish the ABs chance of winning. Not only through 'Suzie' but a raft of dirty tactics, as reported in the Observer and many other reputable media agencies. Sean Fitzpatrick, who has the most honest face in sport, even spoke publicly about the SA RFU president telling him he'd rig the tournament to favor a SA vs AB final. A SA security guard assigned to the ABs at the time confirmed Laurie Mains' assertions about the poisoning. Dude, the truth is out there.
Also, best sports film = a league of their own.

ah, you should have gone last night. Not so full, not too hot, fewer hardcore fans, but SO many converts...
Must admit I'm a convert. Hadyn makes me listen to her studio recordings all. the. time. And I never liked them much - too country and a bit nasaly. BUT her live performance was amazing, better than recorded. It's so refreshing to see performers who are truly talented.
Also, have you seen Whip It? Great movie, love Juliette Lewis. Hope the Auckland derby girls do a great exhibition bout.

I missed the bout, but have seen the Auckland bouts in Auckland and the Wellington bouts in Wellington. Good you think Richter City will up their game. Those Auckland girls have a real different approach, like real rough play. And obvious diffences in crowd support - Richter City supporters are flippin' loud and numerous. It'll also be interesting to follow the Richter up-and-comers. There's some talented Wellingtonians waiting in the wings.

I've already voiced my opinion on the Strawberry Shortcake issue. I still own the Plum Pudding from my childhood - the geeky one with glasses who has since had laser eye surgery and started hanging out with the cool kids. At least their ankles are still fat...

I still haven't decided who to support. Which sucks because I'd love something to yell about and smack downs to give.
So you reckon they'll get 2,000 punters Hadyn? That sounds like an awfully large crowd for an emerging sport. Is it? Like how many people does the Kiwi wrestling get?

I already heard Hadyn's story but now I see it all laid out it's about the people and families behind sports personalities. However you play on the field, to still be respected by friends and family 40 years down the track is the real achievement.
