Kiwi in Space
-
This year we celebrate the 50 years since the first man in space, 30 years since the first space shuttle launch and one year since the start of the KiwiSpace Foundation - determined to get Kiwi into the sky. Damian Christie and Russell Brown caught up with KiwiSpace executive director Mark Mackay.

Surely a bit reckless, given the endangered status of the Kiwi.
I know the Russians fired dogs and monkeys, but they are at least fairly widespread.
Maybe if we need a lightweight creature for tests (although given it was all done in the 1950s, you have to ask why) a sparrow or fieldmouse would be more appropriate.

I think we should put up a tui ... sputnik went around the world beeping ... about a day after we put up TUI1 we'll start getting impassioned cries of "can't you shut that bloody thing off?" proving that we really have found our place among the world's spacefaring nations

Rich, I think you're forgetting the old adage about omelets and eggs. If you want attention for the world, why not send up your mascot to a hero? It'd definitely be iconic and something for the country to get behind.
