  • Hard News: Another nail in the coffin of…,

No, not at all. Much of Real Groovy's and JB HiFi's stock is sourced offshore.

Which brings us nicely to something I've been itching to point out since I went to JB on Queen St a couple of weeks back... I decided against buying the new Amy Winehouse album (or at least the re-release with bonus CD) at Real Groovy where they were charging $36.99 for it - or $39.99 for what looked to be an 'import' of the same thing...

...and a wise decision it was too. $26.99 at JB for the same thing.

I mean, Real Groovy has been gouging customers for some time, but does everyone actually realise by how much?

  • Hard News: Random,

Re Amy Winehouse: I was at a party in London last week standing in a group where two people were comparing stories about how the deelightful Miss W had turned up trashed at their respective parties and vomited all over the place. A mixed blessing clearly, on the one hand you get a good (but increasingly common) celebrity story, on the other hand you've got to clean up some chick's puke.

    Girl can sing though.

  • Cracker: Karachi: What Emergency?,

What a bizarre and fascinating place. I'd be inclined to wear a disguise to avoid all the beggars....

Yeah, you're kinda assuming (and from what I saw, incorrectly) that it's only westerners being asked for money. Trust me, with the amount of beggars in Karachi, and the number of westerners I saw other than in the mirror (um, zero), the locals are being hit up too.

bah, D, you survived Harry The Bastard in NYC..Kabul is a cakewalk....

Yeah, and you know, I reckon anywhere I can still update my Facebook status can't possibly be remote or dangerous enough. But I'm about to head into the absolute hinterland of Afghanistan, so wish me luck.

(and I'll try and keep the bouncing and giggling to a minimum :)

  • Cracker: Mo' Wellington,

I mean, great cause and all, but soooo many people are doing it

I guess what I should have said here, is that I'm concerned that it might just become a whole bunch of dicks growing mo's, and actually lose the charity/fundraising aspect that I think makes it such an excellent idea in the first place.

I say this without having first done any research, so if someone could please approach 1000 randomly selected moustachioed men and ask them what if any fundraising they or their associates are doing for The Cause, and present it to the group while I'm away, that'd be dandy.

It's quite different from poppies or pink ribbons, in that people have to buy the poppies, therefore supporting the cause. It's more like if someone just made their own poppies and wore them because they thought it was a bit of a laugh...

  • Speaker: Singing g against the E chord,

This is so not going to get me down with the cool kids but...

The Exponents - Something Beginning with C

It's not my favourite NZ album (I'll leave that internal debate for another day), but I can't think of any I have more association with.

It was 1992, I was working in a music store in the Hutt when we got the call. Jordan and the boys were coming in. I don't think our shitty little suburban music store ever had ANYONE come in, let alone the Biggest Band in NZ.

Because that's exactly what the Exponents were in 1992. They'd dropped the Dance and were topping charts and rocking pubs all over the country. And before you'd heard them sung a million times at every rugby match and drunken student party, songs like 'Why Does Love Do This To Me?' and 'Who Loves Who the Most?' were quite likeable and catchy. Which is why they went on to be sung at every rugby match and drunken student party from then on.

But I digress. So Jordan and the crew eventually came in to the store. They signed a CD and a poster for me, and wrote down the chords for 'I Loved You' - my favourite track on the album - on the inside sleeve. Jordan rifled through the bargain bin CDs and bought a few. Possibly one of them was Patsy Cline, but I reserve the right to be wrong.

Eventually they left and things returned to their humdrum normality. Until an hour later the phone rang. It was Jordan. He'd left his CDs at the shop, would I mind bringing them in, hang out if I wanted and go along to the gig? Would I?!

(Of course if I'd been an 18 year old girl such a phone call from a rocker would have been extremely dodgy. But I wasn't, and it wasn't.)

So I got on the train, met up with the Exponents and had some beers with them. Not Jordan though, he wasn't drinking. He'd had a bet with the band, I think it was $1000 each, that he wouldn't drink for a year. From what I recall, Jordan later won the bet, collected the money and immediately reacquainted himself with his old friend alco-ma-hol.

Anyway, so I'm drinking with the Exponents. You've got to realise, I was 18, and living a sheltered life in Upper Hutt - this was pretty much the coolest thing that had ever happened to me.

We went along to the gig - at the Carpark - and because I'd told him it was my favourite song, Jordan introduced 'I Loved You' by saying "This One's For Damian". Which again, if I'd been an 18 year old girl. Actually, it was still pretty dodgy, but that's cool, I was hanging with the Exponents. I recorded the gig on my recording walkman, but the sound quality was shit so I later wiped it.

And that's kinda it. I still have the CD and the poster somewhere.

  • Cracker: Mo' Wellington,

On the dissing theme I am using your blog for a plug for the opposition.

Brenda Wallace is a serious contender for the Dub Dub Dub and deserving nomination. Vote for brenda.

And I think therein lies the difference between me and whoever that guy is that runs the National Party's youtube videos - I'm quite happy for you to plug the opposition on my own thread. At least you're all here. :)

And yes, I noticed that Richard McManus was the only person not sad enough (or possibly simply completely oblivious) to put a voting plug on his site...

    But seriously. Vote for me.

  • Cracker: Mo' Wellington,

I'm just disappointed by the ubiquity of the "handlebar" when there are so many others to choose from

Yeah, I was thinking much the same today. It's like it's become the default Movember Mo. Although there is at least one 'personality' who - looking less than the picture of health at the best of times - has grown a 'tache resembling something you'd expect to see in a palliative care hospice in San Francisco in the early 80s...

  • Hard News: Meet the New Bob,

That'd be interesting, given that you're only nominated in one category, although it's a pretty good one.

Ha, that's hilarious, I hadn't seen that. Truth really is stranger than the odd fiction I have running through my head. Be even cooler if my name was spelt properly :)

I also didn't realise my movements around Wellington were being tracked. Only yesterday (at Martinborough) I was drunkenly remarking to someone "thank God I'm not interesting enough for anyone to bother reporting when I'm obnoxiously drunk".

  • Hard News: Meet the New Bob,

    Hey Russell,

    a) Thanks for organising the Wellington Christmas Party when I'm out of town...and b) as one of its much-loved sons I'm quite likely to sweep various "Best in Wellington" categories - would you mind accepting them on my behalf, ta? You know the drill, thank my lawyer, accountant...ask yourself 'Who Would Tim Finn Thank?"
