  • Southerly: The Truth About Talkback,

I was cringing in anticipation of a Cronenberg-style denouement, and glad not to get it.

The remake of "The Fly" meets "And All The Seas With Oysters."

    Well done, sir.

  • Hard News: The Creepy Party,

Act will get 7 - 8% and 10 MPs at the next election.
ACT truly live in a parallel universe, don't they ?

True, but it's cheering that their biggest fantasist's biggest fantasy is 8% of the vote. I'd say that actually confirms their terrible prospects.

  • Speaker: John Roughan is Scared,

people here in wellington, where we have decent public transport, readily call buses "loser cruisers".

Perhaps I haven't lived in Welly long enough, but I've spent 6 of the last 10 years here and that's the first I ever heard that phrase.

I'd say that if you have to pay to park in town then as a commuter motorist you're very much the loser, financially anyway.

I'm not sure whether it was you, Danyl, who used the phrase "social engineering" in this thread first, but I don't think regulating lightbulbs and shower pressure count as social engineering.

I do think those two things were turned into potent symbols, woven into a narrative if you like, and Labour completely failed to put them (and the "hip hop tours" etc) into a bigger picture. I think that's what you're saying in your second para above, and if so, well cripes then the problem wasn't that Labour regulated lightbulbs and shower pressure, and the solution isn't that they should promise not to do it again. And it surely isn't to accept labels ("social engineering") created by their opponents and wear them with shame.

Wow, I had no idea that Chełm was a real place. I blame Singer.

  • Up Front: After the Big Gay Revolution,

recordari: it is recorded that just before a festival of Shavuos there was a shortage of sour cream for blintzes in the village of Chelm. The elders held a crisis meeting. One of them had a bright idea -- pass an ordinance that water was to be known as "sour cream", and sour cream was to be known as "water". Then there would be plenty of sour cream to go around. Every household would have a barrel full. Genius! The elders were very pleased with themselves and duly passed the ordinance.

Some people subsequently complained about the water shortage. But this was put off as business to difficult to resolve immediately, and to be considered after the holidays.

Of course, Chelm was a mythical village of idiots.

Lisa: my Ortlieb panniers have a very nice quick-release mechanism. As I lift them up from the rack they unlatch themselves. I think many other manufacturers have similar systems. So if you don't like your current panniers, it may pay to check out other ones rather than get a basket.
