I had to laugh at this piece of logrolling:
Priebus defended Bannon on Monday (Tuesday NZT), calling him a wise and well-educated former naval officer and saying he had not encountered the sort of extremist or racist views that critics are assailing.
"He was a force for good on the campaign," Priebus said on Fox News.... -

Compass, who truck frozen meals, and meal components to Dunedin from Auckland, to supply the hospital meals, and meals on wheels
That was always a bad idea on so many levels.

wipe out?
I mean , who needs food anyway?
Not to mention toilet paper, now most folk get their news online, there'll be no stack of old newspapers. or old sewing patterns for that matter, to repurpose for loo paper... books it is then...

The take- home from this event is slowly sinking in now that we are up and running sort of . . . viz. that had this been the big one – the 8.5 + Richter on the Alpine Fault – the country is totally unprepared, and within a week or so chaos would have ensued.
.... Here we have backup generation, and backup generators for the backup generators. We also have solar but that is barely useful in the Big One.As these ‘off the grid’ eco- tourist lodge owners have found, preparation is only part of the equation…
OFF THE GRID – LITERALLY
Niky McArthur was on the verge of tears as she talked about the state of her ecotourism business, Kaikoura Wilderness, which is located in a remote valley north of Kaikoura.
“I always thought that whatever was happening in the world we’d be self sufficient up there,” she said.
Monday morning’s earthquake had crippled the “off the grid” Puhi Puhi Rd business, which offered accommodation and guided walks.
Battery banks powering the lodge were destroyed, gas bottles tipped over and water tanks cracked.
The road to the site was impassable and likely would be for many months.
“I’m not sure if I’m going to cry or not. I’m quite shell-shocked. We won’t be able to run a business for [at least] six months. It’s going to have a devastating effect.”(my bolding)

regurgitating of pap sourced from the Disgusting Daily Mail
Must admit I was stunned to see a Herald article on the earthquakes today with this
- additional reporting Daily Mail
at the end !!!
see:

Is that the substation near Paekakariki?

all the frothing from Wikileaks
I suspect Wikileaks is now well past its 'use-by' date, it seems to me it used to not have all the 'agenda baggage' it now carries, or that Assange has burdened it with...

The idea that AI will actually write most of the news we see is genuinely horrifying.

discerning between “the Moon influences earthquakes” and “the Moon is any use for predicting earthquakes”.
Agreed...
I was interested in this study of gravitational field anomalies prior to major earthquakes, detected by satellite.
Detection of gravity changes before powerful earthquakes in GRACE satellite observationsfull pdf:
http://www.annalsofgeophysics.eu/index.php/annals/article/view/6612/6394I read somewhere this and other realtime applications of it were hampered by lack of processing power and satellite access, imagine if some of or all of the Five Eyes type resources were diverted to proactive work rather than paranoia - I'd wouldn't be surprised the NSA's new supercomputers could correlate this data on the fly.

The Battle of the Bulge...
I suspect there may well be some epiphenomenal connections with lunar and tidal cycles, especially around subduction zones - as the earth's magma is also affected by the tidal frequency, who's to say there aren't knock on effects when a bit of slack in the system caused by the passing bulge suddenly allows a large object to pass into the magma chamber, freeing up mass behind in a rush, releasing strain on a connected tectonic system. (see 1* and 2*)Much like the regular 'catch and release' that happens (in geological time) up the Kermadec Trench where a chain of undersea volcanoes are sucked under the Australian Plate (pic above) firing tsunamis and earthquakes towards the Bay of Plenty from time immemorial... (the chain gets gradually closer to NZ - so that is something to warn future generations about)
Heck, look at the various tumbles and turns that Uluru/Ayers Rock took over millennia to get where it is, imagine something that large suddenly popping through into the molten zone...
(see 3*)This is not to say every Super Moon or Full Moon (or close approach to the sun as well) will cause an earthquake, but they might always raise the odds and test a delicate system for confluences of geological events and other 'chinks in the armour'...
