Interesting photos, Chris.
Jackson; should I still think of doing a theme on NZ cinemas sometime? Happy to do so--maybe in a couple of weeks, after teaching has settled into a rhythm. My http://cinemasofnz.info site is getting rather large. -
Or "I have met the enema and it wasn't fun"?

I can verify at least part of Russell's account as I was sitting next to him at the "Bad Behaviour" session and he was tweeting away. Indeed, I was tempted to lean over and take his device off him!
I think the Herald's decision to lead with this story (and deliberately mis-interpret the context?) is as ill-judged as Judge Harvey's quip. Oh, the irony!

Much of the problem is to do with the damn PBRF, which persists in placing the laboured book or highly specialised, peer-reviewed article at the top of the heap. I have had book chapters in overseas collections arrive 4 or 5 years after I wrote the thing and it is often just plain depressing. What we need (in an ideal world) is for the canon to be over-turned, to give greater credit to web-based and other , newer forms of publication.
I like writing book reviews, especially if it is a good book, but academics get bugger-all credit for doing this.
Peer reviewing can also sail close to academic censorship too and you have to be very aware of this.

Difficult to know. It may just be a tale of caution about posting Twitter messages in the public domain, or it could be a story about unusual political pressure, Whatever the reasons, it is a loss for a very important legal case. Judge Harvey is one smart manl

Russell: I will have to take you along to the Waikato Stadium and the Chiefs some day, to restore your faith in the rugby experience.

I once took a non-credit course in cross-country skiing during my US PhD studies. On the other hand, I really appreciated the US-style taught PhD (high level coursework, practicums, internships, language requirement etc), where everything does not hinge on the final thesis. I do feel for some NZ students I meet, for so much depends on finding a dedicated and skilled PhD supervisor, as well as the need to sustain enthusiasm for your chosen topic over three or more tees.

In other (not so good) news, the great UK music/culture magazine The Word is ceasing publication with the August 2012 issue,
