I was a keep the sad old racist bugger supporter, as hhe was just so divisive that even my mum who voted National her entire life voted against him last time, this was good for Labour.

I think Key has a real chance of giving Labour hell.

the best bit about it is there will be no more bloody Orewa speeches, thank christ for that.

boy that book must have some juicy bits in it :)

  • Island Life: All stadium, all the time,

NH stadium is an absolute no go.

Why put something where the people aren't if it is inteneded to be used as much as possible. But the NH stadium would seriously have to address the issue of getting over the bridge.

take the U2 concert, the bus company has been advertising that people taking the bus to the concert can't take the bus home, services stopped by then. WTF. What unenterprising idiot can't pay some drivers an hours overtime and make the company some money and more importantly customer relationships - brand building.

Here in Dunedin, to get a taxi to the peninsula after a few beers in the evening is upwards of $35. Now fro Auckalnders this is nothing, but when the average fare in dunners is close to $6 it's huge. So the bus company in its wisdom made a one way journey at 1am I think it is. Not always full, but providing a public service on a very long dark anddangerous road.

Not one to listen to talkback except marcus lush, I happened to be still on the station driving into varsity this morning and silly old Laws was on. Boy was he giving it to Auckland, but I have to agree everything he said (and this galls me to say) mad sense.

Boy did Laws lay into the managment of the bus company in Auckland.

But more than anything else why is it the voice of the negative buggers is always louder than the positives? It's like down here in Dunedin, my god do we need a new stadium, and the most innovative, exciting, stimulating and progressive place is the waterfront. But no two bloody minded councilors whos self importance is beyound belief are railrodding every single

    Angry Taylor quits stadium trust
    By David Loughrey

The head of Dunedin company Animation Research has resigned from the Carisbrook Stadium Trust, and launched a stinging broadside against what he calls the negative politics of two councillors.

Ian Taylor resigned after a private meeting with councillors on Tuesday, and said he could no longer deal with the “totally unproductive” attitudes of Crs Leah McBey and Lee Vandervis.

“No amount of money could make me spend two minutes in a room with those people."

Ms McBey believes that she has the right to ask the hard questions of any stadium trust on behalf of the people that voted for her. Well people that voted for her also believe that a stadium is good, so is she representing their interests?

As for the quips about a

    Trevor Malard Stadium

please leave it out. More than one man wants this and it will not be remembered for his name.

  • Hard News: Something up with Apple?,

    Nice,

now all I have to do is convince myself to get the credit card out of hiding.

Some of the coolest things out of iTunes stores are the lists. Maybe I am a list kind of guy, perhaps in some inane need for acceptance of groups or some other sociological/psychological need, but in the vein of the lead character Rob of the movie High Fidelity, I like lists and top 5 lists.

So in the absence of a NZ iTunes store I check out the UK one from time to time, if nothing else to check out the lists.

A particularly cool list going at the moment is 50 great British albums. And having 32 of the 50, I guess I am a BritPop kinda guy.

  • Island Life: All stadium, all the time,

    Mark,

I've got to argue for a couple of stadiums here that are iconic.

Wembley, the old and the new, possibly the most iconic sports architecture ever, that attracted tourists of its own right.

Past our naval's Wrigley Field in Chicago and Yankee Stadium ar two examples that transend sports architecture and are now part of the cultural heritage of a nation. This is also true of wembley, just think of Live Aid and Queen Live at Wembley, part of the musical history of the west. But also Shea stadium is remembered as much for the record and ground breaking concerts by the Beatles than anything else (well outside of NY that is).

I've also go to argue that the Allanz stadium in Munich is outstanding and in time will be iconic.

But the idea of stadium being beautiful is about to be taken to a new level (an I'm not talking about the cras commerialisation of parks like minute Maid park in Houston - Disney meets sport), but the work being done around Bejing in particular the new olympic park and swimming complex is just unbelievable.

Having said all of the above, we are of course talking aesthetics, and what is high art to one person (minute maid park) is just cheap tacky commercialisation to another.

  • Hard News: Music in Parks,

In light of Dobyns disclosure about the Queen aproving of the music, Mr McCully must have egg somewhere on that face of his? Any comments from the man yet?

But further to that, what a twat having a go at the musician and not the dotty old royals who fell asleep on our service. That just wouldn't be good form now would it.

Slightly off task here (and putting my designers hat on here), in setting off to the national party web site to get one Mr McCully's email address, I was instantly taken back by how much space on that page is dedicated to Labour and the use of red. The top third of the site has two very promonent red banners. Of course they are the classic attack adds, but as a branding exercise it can't be good form to draw so much attention to the oposition – can it? And most literature about web branding talks about the use of colour and the way we read a web page. Rather than diving right into the text we skim the page for relevant images and headlines or links, then we get down to the nitty gritty.

I'm a designer and I had to do a very quick double take to make sure I was at the right web site.

Back to the music, boy is someone going to have a field day on my laptop. It has most of the albums I own ripped on it, not to mention albums I used to own and have either lost or given away or sold again (what pocessed me to buy Eurogliders), or just singles from these albums I no longer pocess. 28Gb is a lot to have to troll through and justify if some suit from the ministry comes knocking (an no I never really got on the Napster bandwagon - dial up was just way too slow to bother).

    What is Australia thinking?

  • Hard News: Assault by Monstrous,…,

    Ian,

Sure he may have some good points, unlike Bob the Builder in the herald this morning, but I've got a feeling the argument from the govt goes something like this.

half a billion (or whatever the figure is) for a stadium, not half a billion for a stadium or 168,000 hip operations or cateract operations.

They are going to front up with the money for this or keep it in their purses, not spend it on other things.

  • Hard News: Assault by Monstrous,…,

Will eight times more people turn up for the world cup than the Lions tour?

it's not envisioned that this one off event will pay for the whole deal. It's expected to draw income from events other than bloody thugby.

Overseas they have graduation services inside stadiums, why not on the waterfront (mind you this is Auckland we are talking about, take a brollie).

As I've said before, the BC Place stadium in Vancouver is used over 250 days of the year, not bad for a cold dark (somewhat in need of repair) place. We've got to take this into consideration when looking at future revenue streams for the stadium.

One amazing thing they do in Vancouver each summer is Shakespear on the waterfront, in the finest traditions of the Globe theatre with the backdrop of the setting sun behind the cast (in an open backed tent that is), magincal effect.

Come on start thinking laterally, god it's not hard. I for one would love to open a gelato stall on the walkway around it.
