unsexiest word
That would be "Richard" or "Worth" wouldn't it?

Project Runway and Top Chef are both truly fascinating. For one thing, the contestants are often very weird, interesting, passionate, talented people who desperately love what they're doing. They create amazing things with limited materials at high speed. I am often quite awestruck at their skill.
The latest series of Top Chef was interesting - possibly even an evolution in a slightly different direction for that style of contest-based reality show.
Early on in the series, it became apparent that the contestants were basically a bunch of people who could be competitive without being nasty. So the amount of contrived tension/aggression/schism that normally gets edited into these shows dropped off. Instead, they played up the (relative) warmth and good-sportingness being shown. I thought it made for a more satisfying viewer experience.

However, should the referendum instead pose the question asked of NZ Herald readers today: "Is a conviction appropriate for punching a child?" it might offer a very different, and more valuable outcome.
That's not the question being asked on the Herald as far as I can see. Poll of the day is: Has the anti-smacking legislation reduced assaults on children?
Who, without full access to research data, court records, police files etc, knows that? Your average Herald reader, apparently.

Ahem, Craig (and Simon and Mark while I'm at it). I go away for less than a day and get mistaken for a racist. Not often that one prepares a rebuttal several days beforehand, which I presume you all missed:
Wha? No, no, no. It was just that you said "Asian" and "pie" in the same sentence, and my mind wandered off to a very strange place, somewhere beyond the motorway. What followed was in no way meant as a comment on your comments. Apologies if you thought that's what I was doing.
-
The term Asian would imply a fair bit of diversity, in its own right and vis-a-vis Europeans, I would have thought. What other ingredients need to be in that pie?
Hey, we were talking piracy, not cannibalism.
But seriously....general New Zealand discourse has never done a good job of acknowledging the variety of cultures and ethnicities that get lumped together by the term "Asian". And the way we use it always seems to exclude Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans and Bangladeshis.

A canal along the motorway, so our Mt Albert privateers can shoot the cars of South Aucklanders from our gunboats.
-
The part of my that buys into ethnic stereotyping has been secretly hoping that, given the large number of Somalian families in our Mt Albert neighbourhood, we'll see a resurgence in piracy. Unfortunately, they all seem to want to carry on going about their law-abiding business and being a normal part of the community.
I blame it on the lack of a decent-sized body of water. Motorway pirates however...now THAT would be interesting...

To me, what Lee has done is show her complete lack of understanding of the electorate she's standing for. There's poverty and crime in our own backyard without the need to import any from its alleged home in that made-up bogeyland, "South Auckland".
Maybe she's been talking to John Key, who thought Owairaka was in South Auckland when he was banging on about McGehan Close that time?

At the risk of showing the depths of my late afternoon torpor, I should have known that...I'm picturing a Vogon Destructor Fleet hovering over my house right now...

don't forget your towel ....
They don't excite me that much.
