Jeremy, then propose a workable solution that would actually have made a difference

I can't see why as a community it would be impossible to start addressing the question of unregistered guns. Like any problem it would start with education and an attitudle change to the posssesion, purchasing and collecting of firearms from the community. If we can pick up the phone and dob in a tinnie house surely we can have individuals in the know alert the law of arsenal buliding. Someone sells them.

I really, truly do not see any confluence between the two positions, and to be honest I find it somewhat distasteful that people are making the suggestion. Snee hasn't even been buried, for crying out loud!

I don't like seeing cops get shot, i don't like seeing cops get abused but it's not like we have a public who totally trust them. This is an issue of cop safety, it's got nothing to do with when the officer gets buried.Stop playing emotional cards, no one is trying to disrespect him.

Jan was 51. He doesn't sound like a timebomb when you hear his friends talk about him. He hadn't exploded before that .He was an angry man , who had far too many weapons and snapped due to policing methods that let's face it fuck off a lot of peolpe off. We still don't have a clear timeline of his meltdown. Yes a registry sounds complicated but your "nothing can be done attitude" is bordering on distasteful. Who'd be a cop?

    Great point Mikaere.

I think Matthews point on the registry system is a good one too but there must be someway to at least revisit gun law, even if it's just education.

I don't want cops facing guns in suburbia (or anywhere) but of course I don't have the immediate answer.

Almost invariably a person who commits a crime with a firearm has no licence, has never held a licence, and is thus completely under any legal radar. Nothing that can be done will change that, short of becoming a police state.

    Who would be a policemen?

I understand your logic although it appears that this particular gunman was known as a collector of guns by a few people. I mean the legal radar picks him up as a drug dealer but not an illegal gun holder. Isn't it all about how consistent and reasonable your radar is?

Arguing for cannabis law reform off the back of this incident risks being as distateful as Mr O'Connor using it to argue for "more Tasers, faster".

No, if we do anything with this incident it is at least desirable to understand what happened. O'connor spent the whole day talking
about how police should be allowed to police which is vague and kind of scary, don't make unfair comparisons.

You are allowed to ask questions of your law, it's not unusual to look at cause and effect. There are many issues that arisen over this major incident , it's not unreasonable to be concerned at what the police are doing while still recognising a tragic loss.

And for whatever reasons jan m snapped he was still holding an illegal arsenal, that needs at least adressing too.

Having just finished "The Wire" TV show the whole "drug issue" side of it does seem quite pertinent.

We wasted a life, hours of policetime, thousands of dollars on a low level drug bust that even if it did go well wouldn't have made one dent on criminal drug activity. He was hardly Mr Asia.

No. Just no! A firearms registry does absolutely nothing to help with gun crime, and ends up costing north of a billion dollars, vastly more than projected, and that's without actually being completed. They're worthless "be seen to be doing something" projects, nothing more.

So how do you stop gun hoarding?

The police went to Jan's house to help with the 'war on drugs" , because apparently cannabis is killing the very fabric of our society

...what they found was a hothead with an arsenal that begs belief.

    1) stop policing class c drugs
    2) start policing guns.

This is not a criticism of the police, it's our poor laws.
