    Will do. I recall there was a restaurant on the opposite corner but not much else.

  • Hard News: Media3: Standards Showdown,

    There was a whole industry in school-based testing (PAT, CLOZE tests) when I worked at the NZ Council for Educational Research. They are strangely silent in this whole debate.

  • Hard News: Irony Deficient,

    What a great topic. The problem is that we have such a surfeit of self-satirising around--from Key's and Bank's selective amnesia, to Dotcom's antics.

  • Capture: Cinema Scoped,

    Haven't been here for a while but there is news:

    * a new 26 seat cinema has opened as an adjunct to Finns Hotel in Paekakariki;
    * the Lighthouse Cuba (Wigan Street, Wellington) is due to open in mid-October;
    * the Focal Point Cinemas (Feilding and Leven) have taken over the Hastings cinema (presumably the Readings venue which closed earlier this year);
    * the Dargaville community group are on the way to bringing back a dedicated cinema to a town which hasn't had one for 30 years.

    There you go .....

  • Hard News: Music: New in the Neighbourhood,

    On older music, in the interest of historical symmetry , I should go see The Pretty Things at the Powerstation in December 11. As a very young sprout, I was at the New Plymouth concert which famously led to them being banned for life from New Zealand (a ban which has presumably expired, or maybe TPTs are the undead?) They are using The Truth story to promote their 2012 tour,
