Euan, good to hear that Scandinavia lives up to the ideals that some of us on this part of the world ascribe to that part of the world.

Thanks Sacha. Oops, I meant main provider NGO for ID.
By the way I only had a minor part in the ASD Guideline development. I have always been an outsider in these government processes, with only the occasional glimpse in. The role of 'critic and conscience' feels more comfortable.

NZ has largely been settled by refugees of one kind or another from the Highland clearances and the Irish potato famine or seeking freedom to practice their religion or utopian ideas to those just seeking a new life in a new country. In the 1870s refugees from Britain and Europe came in by the shipload.
It has never been easy. There have been times when hundreds came such as the Polish children and their caregivers (800 in all). By the way that happened because Janet Fraser the wife of the Prime Minister and the wife of the Polish ambassador persuaded their husbands to make it happen. Helena Wisnieswska Brow's father was one of this group and she has written a wonderful story about him in Give us this day.
Te Ara as usual has a useful overview

Access: Disability as a wicked policy problem, in reply to
You could set up a closed Facebook Group. Or even an open one. Some staunch collective advocacy from some Facebook groups for parents of those with autism or kids with special needs generally has recently forced the Ministry of Education to run well-attended angry meetings around the country on the previously almost secretive special education update.

I have to declare a small conflict of interest in the New Model evaluation. Many years ago when the tender came up I advised Evalue Research about some of the background and a suitable disability representative. When that representative got another job (hint - he has written posts here) I and others recommended Martin Sullivan replace him. A couple of years ago I helped set up some of the interviews although I didn't participate in any of them. I haven't read the final report but I respect the skills of that team.

Thanks for these reports. At least some reports and evaluations don't end up in a big black hole. Worth keeping to check back on in 10 years time and see if anything has changed.

It is sad that we will never see stories about Pike River, Health and Safety legislation or Christchurch earthquake issues on the light-weight Story. Instead we get endorsements of that rape-culture-endorsing Edge radio station.

Hosking wanted to be a broadcaster from the age of 12. Five years later he was at Radio Windy, writing advertising copy and smoking 20 cigars a day. Now, at just 25, his voice is familiar to 200,000 people between Radio Northland in Whangarei and Radio Southland in Invercargill .... First you see the suit, as you are supposed to. It's pinstripe, double-breasted, offset by a Pierre Cardin white shirt with a slash of red tie descending to cover the buttons. The tie is doubly secured with a gold tie pin and combination medallion...his hair ... is swept into a Byronesque coif which gives him a couple of ersatz inches ... He drove around in a 1969 Mk1 Daimler Sovereign .. He joined the Daimler club ... sold it, bought a 15-bedroom, two -storey house in Port Chalmers.. He has a wine collection of 200 bottles....'I'm a money person, I'm a capitalist. I'm to the right of Roger Douglas. ...He says that TV is "all crap".. We also learn that the smokes 6 cigars each show and that Winston Peters is a fan. Tim Wilson has fun in a North and South article from 1990 (that I just came across while researching something totally unrelated)

The Minister has now said she herself will apologise to affected individuals, but she does not get that idea that the State allowed abuse, so the State must apologise. That means the PM and Governor General and formally and seriously. Plus ongoing restorative processes.
