  • Hard News: The positive option of Red Peak,

I am lucky enough to have a flagpole on the property. When the weather is fine without a gale (not that often) I usually fly the Hundertwasser green koru which is my favourite. I have the United Tribes flag for Waitangi Day and the Australian Aboriginal Flag for Australia Day - and for other times when I feel like it. I don't have and would never fly the current NZ flag, nor a silver fern.

I have just got Red Peak which will be a great addition to the collection. So I am quite happy with a diversity of flags. Do we really need just one?

  • Hard News: The positive option of Red Peak,

By the way I nominate Red Peak for the 2015 Public Address Word of the Year. If Kirkaldies can open its (last ever) Christmas shop in September, I can nominate something after only 9 months of a 12 month year.

  • Access: Safe schools for everyone,

Thanks Catherine. Autism probably affects a lot more than 40,000 people. That is a conservative figure based on old overseas data estimating a 1% prevalence rate. I am interested in the 13,000 number of people 2-14 diagnosed on the spectrum. I am not sure where that figure comes from as no diagnostic statistics are kept. That might be the number seeking services? What we do know is that most of them will not get any targeted support through ORS funding. We also have no figures for those affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Those with this condition are very likely to need significant educational support. So although this inquiry seems limited to just three conditions it is important that education is inclusive for all our NZ kids in all their diversity. Perhaps 20% will need some kind of extra support to access the teaching and learning to reach 'the fullest extent of their powers'.

Apparently Corbyn’s Labour victory ‘offers hope to disabled people’ according to disability activists. He and his deputy John McDonnell both have records of supporting disabled people and disability issues. So we shall see if they can fight back against the disablist policies of the UK government on such things as work testing and removal of disability supports. http://www.disabilitynewsservice.com/corbyns-labour-victory-offers-hope-to-disabled-people/

I think I referred to Perlina Lau as 'the young social media woman' - I would never use the dismissive sexist word 'chick'. I don't watch that Paul Henry programme so not familiar with the names of people on it, but it is sometimes on in the house, so I guess what their roles are.

  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine,

Story just did a puff piece promoting National Party spin doctor Bill Ralston as a candidate for the Auckland City Council next year. Had a whole lot of stupid clichés about council spending across NZ worthy of the ACT party (but only in towns where the mayor is mildly left wing). Political agenda definitely showing.

  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine,

Paul Henry TV was on when I went past living room earlier and the young social media woman who was announcing the launch of Scout did not look or sound that thrilled about it.

I hear Sweden has taken thousands of refugees recently and have created a whole town for them. Not sure if that is the best way but at least it is a better response than ours.

They also have a pretty terrible history of eugenics which they really only started to confront about two decades ago.
