  • Field Theory: Every four years, in reply to Megan Wegan,

There’s just something about the prospect of staying up til the middle of the night watching handball, or rhythmic gymnastics, or fencing.

I have to stop watching this road race and go to bed. Why can't I?

And shouting 'IT"S TIME' is just disingenuous

I disagree, Steve. I think it's a reflection of the significant shift in public opinion - and the change here mirrors that in the States.

we are gay, not straight, and nor do we want or need heteronormalized existences.

We who, dude? Me, I'm bi. I want the same options in all of my relationships. I don't want one set of rights if I'm "being straight" and another if I'm "being gay". But that's me. I don't speak for bi people, and you don't speak for gay people. You certainly don't speak for the gay people I know working really hard for this.

    which is happening because Louisa

unless this is a sentence which goes on to say, "wrote the bill and put it in the ballot", bullshit. It's happening because it's time, and past time. This is history, Steve. You can't even make a convincing case that it doesn't matter to you.

That the silent moralist are not in the majority, and/or that election night gains have little to do with how an MP votes on one or more issues.

It is just weasely for an MP to refuse to state what they believe in.

Indeed. And we have the polling data on this. When John Key says he thinks his electorate is opposed, what he's saying is that he reckons they're twice as bigoted as the rest of the country. The only demographic that has less than 50% support for gay marriage is "over 55". And "Helensville", apparently.

Can I just get clarification on something? This is a conscience vote, is it? Or is there a party whip & all the weaselly ones will be bound by a collective caucus position on it?

It's a conscience vote. So far as I know, the Greens are the only party holding their MPs to a party position on it.

The best I'm hoping for from Nicky Wagner, to be honest, is that she notices two things:
1/ This is an issues people are 2 to 1 in favour of
2/ She holds her electorate by the razorest-thin of majorities.

What the hell does that mean?

"And one of those people is me. And I like to respect my opinion. I mean, who else is going to?"

It's not certain whether he'll still be an MP at the time of the vote(s)?

There's a word for what I'm feeling right now. It's German.

I am filled with hope, as yet unrequited, that Act On Campus will bring their MP to his senses.

The sense being that you shouldn't say out loud that six inches of barbed wire shoved up the arse of a gay man is "a waste of good barbed wire"?
