Not surprised. Injecting it is for the most hardcore junkie, the least concerned about one's health and safety.

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

I don't think the positive thinking thing is all negative. Perhaps not so much positive as seeing it as an opportunity for some interesting new experiences, even if some you would rather not have, had you a choice.

I think it's like many cures. Worth a shot, but by no means guaranteed to help.

I had a mate in Ozzie who said he'd injected it, and it was a huge rush, you get the entire quantity over a few seconds - even faster than 'smoking' it, which is pretty damned fast, can be all over in a minute, if you go at it with gay abandon. He said it felt like your heart would burst for 20-30 seconds, then it was just an insanely rushy feeling. He also said it was a stupid thing to do, a chapter of his life he'd rather not remember. He was a pretty nutty guy even still, and a total drunk and chain smoker. He prefers that now, obviously. A classic high functioning addict - he was not just good at his work, he was brilliant. But everyone knew he was a drunk and a nut. He got away with it by being a funny nut, and more importantly by being able to fix anything, anytime, or die trying.

Dutch style bikes are good in flat towns. Not sure how good they'd be in Auckland though. A lighter bike is always welcome, as is a large gear range. I agree that if they're tricked out with baskets etc, they're more immediately useful, but there's a reason these things are sold as extras. Not everyone wants them, and they often want to mix/match styles, quality etc. Some people never ride at night, so have no need for lights. Others don't want accessories that can be easily stolen, because their bikes are chained up in public for long periods.

The hybrid style (I have one) is a nice compromise for Auckland terrain. It's nice and light, comfortable to ride at a leisurely pace, but not uncomfortable to power along on.

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

I expect ancient rowers hardened to the task set to them. Which would be in many cases to row all day. We don't have many events like that, people don't actually need to row around, so our rowers will not be tuned to it. I doubt the ancient rowers could have come close to the moderns in modern events. I doubt their sprinters could have kept up with our champs either.

Does an imprint of the bottom of a swimming pool on my scalp count as a tat? If so, 100%.

If I'm drafting you it's because you were faster and overtook me.

If I'm drafting you it's cause I've got an army and I'm gonna teach you how to act like a man.

From Avondale? I'm guessing you put extra air
in the tyres and added the outrigger training pontoons...
    ;- )

I have seen amphibious bikes on YouTube. You think lycra looks silly?

It's pretty cool how the Waiheke ferry doesn't charge extra for bikes.

Knowing when to sound it gently rather than at full force is a bit of an art though; it seems to irritate some people just as much as a silent near miss would have.

Nowhere near as much as a silent hit would though. I ding from distance. Gives people time for a dignified adjustment. Still unsure how to handle dogs though. I usually just slow down.

I cycle for fun and exercise from Avondale, Auckland. About half of my trips have my son on the back, and are just short ones to various spots - Pt Chev Beach is his favorite, followed by Oakley Creek Waterfall, but lots of other places have had a visit - Western Springs, many trips to K-Rd, top of Mt Albert, New Lynn, Herne Bay, the Viaduct, and lots of close locations, the local primary school, mall, library, Whau creek boat ramp and pathways. If I'm on my own I go harder and further, climbed up to Waiatarua, commuted to Glendowie several times, rides out to the country, several rides to Titirangi. I've ridden to the bach on Waiheke. I can't justify really long rides to my wife! So I try to make up for it by going harder on shorter rides.

I do have to wonder how much of the whacky conspiracy nuttiness famous in P-heads is more a product of selection than the drug itself. If you are into something that is highly illegal, involves dealing with gangsters on a regular basis, and is increasingly vilified by society, you're probably self selected from a highly paranoid subset of society.

The biggest P-head I know was already a nut before he tried any drugs (I remember him as a sweet and extremely athletic 13 year old). He had also been tried on Ritalin as a child due to ADHD. I've known him for 25 years, and I've never seen him nut off on P (although he does say that it did make him do things he regrets), but I have seen him nut off stone cold sober in extremely alarming ways if rarked up.
