  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

How the hell did you score 27, dyan? There must have been some dimension you really hammered.

Interesting, but extremely preliminary, given the numbers involved and the fact that they only looked at adult men.

If they could reliably get all the males, there's 80% of ASD right there.

But the important one would surely be children, rather than adults. In adults it's a relatively easy diagnosis compared to pre-verbal children. And considering the massively amplified dividends of early intervention, that's where it would pay off the most.

Ross that is a surreal post to read after just putting down Watchmen.

Gio writes on this subject often. Check him out if you don't already.

My two cents on the old Muslim is that he'd probably be as bitter on a portrait as a snapshot. My guess is he'd have a rather mystical take on the matter. Not that he's wrong, there's definitely delusions of immortality in all human endeavor. I just don't think he'd consider a polaroid or digicam to be much different to veristic art. It's all idolatry at heart.

Although I sometimes get impatient with Aspie advocates who seem to forget that there can be real harm in people not being able to interact well with their environment.

I know what you mean. There is a line between tolerating/celebrating difference, and indulgence. A hard one to find in many cases, but it's there.

    But why?

People could fall out the open doorway? Also, there might have been someone walking underneath the door, baggage people or something. Don't the doors have explosive bolts that blow them off?

Does seem OTT to me, though. Firing him would be sufficient. This way, more people will hear about it.

Edit: A better response was one I heard on a flight recently, on Qantas. Imagine an Ozzie accent yelling "HEY YOU! SIT THE FUCK DOWN!!". It worked, transcended the obvious language barrier the guy opening the overhead locker was trying to milk.

    Takapuna Beach?

    Mission Bay?

I'd say Pt Chev Beach. That's the Waitakeres in the background and there's a boat club at Pt Chev. Also, lots of shells.

Ya, exceptional ability of any kind usually involves obsessive training, and that goes for sports, arts, music, intellectualizing, writing, pretty much anything. It's only disorder if it can't find a socially acceptable direction. Which means 'disorder' is a social construct wrt autism.

Just a thought to whack out there: The autistic tendency can often result in mastery of any game for which there are rules. If the game you decide to play, for whatever reason, happens to be a social one, then you could actually be a master of social situations, and yet still well on the spectrum. It's a very complex disorder, so complex that calling it a disorder is only measurable by what effect it's had on your life.

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

Nah. I did it out of curiosity and I am not shy (don't ya think?).

You're not shy, but that isn't the only dimension of the test, of course, just a major one. I felt much like your man did about a lot of the questions, could have scored much higher. A lot of times there was a conflict between "Is it asking about where I came from, or where I'm going to, or where I am now?". Which is one of the dangers in such testing, IMHO. If you put yourself in a box, it can feel empowering or disempowering very much depending on whether you wanted to be in the box. Going on past evidence (the only "objective" evidence), it's going to be skewed towards where you came from. Going only on what you'd say you felt comfortable being labeled with now, it could represent more of a goal than a reality. Going on "now", you'll probably be averaging the two.

Just as an example of what I'm saying, consider the question "Am I a violent person?". If you have committed acts of violence, then an objective consensus would be on "yes". But if you never commit one again, ever? Is that consensus actually right?

For some people it could be an easy test - they answer as they were, are, and always will be. But for people who are trying to change, I think it's not accurate. Could still be interesting, but sharing the results is not compulsory. I don't like being in boxes much, of any kind. I feel it makes people see only a cliche of me. Perhaps I'm deluded, and people seeing steadily refining cliches is actually what happens anyway. But even so, I'd just as soon be able to move. I'm not going to stand still just so people can see me clearly.

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

It's extremely interesting just how uniform this particular mental aspect of the majority of the commentators here is, considering just how far from it the host is, and how wide the range of demographics (well, actually, aren't we mostly the same age?). Some theories on how that comes about:
    1. Most commentators on the 'net are like this, it's a medium that encourages participation by people-shy people.
    2. People of like mind group together.
    3. Russell's familiarity and ease with auties (and what to do when they're naughty) is soothing and encouraging.
    4. It's an outlier.
    5. Only people who are see themselves as shy would bother with the test, the rest haven't spoken up.

I'm curious with those who scored high whether your choices of partner are introverted or extroverted. Similarly with those who scored low, actually.

And why can't you make an emotional connection with someone without having sex with them?

Yes, surely it is possible to love your family like that. Even in Tasmania.
