Most of the stories on this merger don't really stress that both parent companies of FairfaxNZ/Stuff and NZME have Australian parent companies, it's not as if we are really supporting local media enterprises, and recent history shows that the Australians don't care for NZ on many levels.

a cultural aside:

John Cooper Clarke explores Thomas de Quincey's autobiographical classic Confessions of an English Opium Eater -
Ken Loach's 2013 Documentary The Spirit of '45
Details
Tuesday, May 9 at 7 PM - 10 PM
Joint event co-hosted by the Canterbury Socialist Society and the NZ Fabian Society screening Ken Loach's 2013 Documentary "The Spirit of '45'".Through a collection of interviews and archival footage, Ken Loach explores the landslide electoral victory of the UK Labour Party in 1945 that helped establish the post-war consensus, the welfare state, and the nationalisation of certain industries. "The Spirit of '45" looks at the legacy of this period, the strengths and weaknesses, and is instructive for audiences today in how a somewhat ambitious - though no doubt flawed - Keynesian Social Democratic programme gained enormous popular support within the British working class.
The evening is open to all who are interested, and is being held in the wonderful Space Academy - 371 St Asaph Street (between Fitzgerald Ave and Barbadoes St - opposite Galaxy and the Dark Room). Admission is free, and the evening will run as follows:
7pm - Brief welcome and introduction
7.10-8 - Part one of the film
8-8.15 - Intermission
8.15-9 - Part two of the filmAfterwards attendees are welcome to stay and mingle, discuss the film, have a beer and chat.

Fyre I bid you to burn...
Welcome to Festerville! It could have been OK if you were into it, the "cultural moment created from an alchemic blend of music, art and food" it was promoted as.
Instead the festival, supposed to start on Friday (NZT) has descended into chaos and been postponed.
Guests on social media are reporting they are stranded at an unfinished site overrun by feral dogs and mountains of rubbish.
Tents have reportedly been set on fire and festival-goers are jostling over limited and poor quality food.http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/music/92039568/send-help-luxury-bahamas-music-festival-descends-into-chaos-as-blink-182-pull-out
I see via the wayback machine that the 'organisers' claims were quite prescient:"The Experience
LIKE ALL GREAT STORIES,
THIS IS A VOYAGE
This is a world of surreal experiences and inspired curiosity that touches the sweet spot between imagination and possibility. A place where the tropical sun shines all day, and our celebrations ignite the night. This is an invitation to unplug, connect with something deeper, and hunt for something bigger."Lord of the Flies anyone?

Steve said he couldn’t believe how good it sounded when he went back to it. The key, he thought, was …
…the Vegetables!
The Vegetables hold the key…One of my favourite tracks off the squirm songs tape was ’Veges’
Maybe Steve might put the Gorgonzola tape (SQ002) up for listening as well
why ’hanging song’ was never a hit eludes me (or ’Rules of Conduct’ ) and I also seem to have The Reflectograph Corporation tape by The Squirm as well. They were great live as well.
These guys were well ahead of the curve – a complete works is called for IMHO.

Shadowbahn by Steve Erickson is an interesting read – involving the reappearance of the Twin Towers in the Dakota Badlands and Elvis Presley’s stillborn twin somehow resurrected takes his place in the timeflow – a book of time and allusion – a dream read for those who’ve done American Studies (that counts Uni of Canterbury students out these days) and followers of US music and popular culture….

What a marvellously presumptuous preamble.
You can apprise yourself of what details are known here:

and then flesh out your conjecture at your leisure.
As I read it Jonathan Coleman's HPRG (Hospital Redevelopment Partnership Group) got Deloittes to to do a review of the hospital's car parking needs and someone saw a saving without looking at the big picture - and we all know how much this Government likes being told things they want to hear when it comes to saving money...Meanwhile the planet passes through the remnants of Comet Thatcher and Aurora are visible as far north as Auckland, and the biggest coronal hole I've ever seen in the sun passes solar wind in our direction...
funny old thing life....
