  • Legal Beagle: The Inexorable Advance,

You know gutfeeling deregulation in the name of freedom has had some terrible results in other arenas, especially economic.

While it creates a short term buzz of fairness it inevitably opens systems up to abuse and manipulation in the long term when power balances are changed dramatically with no real thought to the long term consequences.

Why can't we respect the strategic tradition of our better laws , weighing the good they do rather than pretend that freedom is at serious challenge here.

Our cities don't have to be changed on pure emotion , especially on the zealot like emotions of our worst finance minister.

Isn't this another nail in the coffin of partnership,

The Treaty of Waitangi is a partnership. Auckland is historically a Maori city but then we all signed a partnership.I would have thought
it would have been an excellent time to remind the nation just what we have to get our heads around. As Sharples said yesterday on the radio, .."We (maori) are here forever".

"What is the compelling state interest to be advanced by giving associations of students the power to compel others to join them?

It's a balance of interests , this balance should provide richer discussions between an adult student body and any organisation that can help that many times "vunerable" juggle of learning important stuff on little resources.

It's a tradition. It worked in the past. Is it working now? If not , why not? Is it money?

Will unions strength suffer under voluntary membership ? yes
Is strength important to a union? It's vital.
Will the demise of union stength effect the bargaining power of the averge student over there student life? Almost certainly.
What freedoms are being gained here and do they match up to what is being lost?

  • Hard News: No Surprises,

The whole announcement on the maori seats was played out so well that I can't help to think the participants were stagemanged.

But what does Sharples get for his patience? Isn't this another nail in the coffin of partnership, isn't this still on (treaty) paper supposed to be a partnership between Maori and Crown.I'd of thought that would have been a line in the sand for the (a) Maori Party.

And banks helping us out, guilt maybe.....how about just staying at work and just drop our recession squeezing interest rates on credit.....that's what the community needs.

Unions form to correct imbalances. Labour Unions greatly enhanced the voice of labour and helped create a louder more powerful voice for the worker at the great New Zealand bargaining table. It's very difficult to bargain with your boss fairly by yourself for many workers.

Strong student unions I assume do the same activity. They keep their eye on student health and collect independent feedback.

They are a tradition of our University arrangement. Collectives are a great way of providing balance.

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

I think this particularly referendum is bullshit. Voting in it supports its
legitimacy. Non - votes in a referendum are very important.

Its bullshit, hitting youir kids. It's lazy parenting.

They're probably suggesting that you shouldn't try crossing the road while high ;)

I bet he died happy, but seriously why didn't he just tell his partner he had just taken a giant toke and couldn't drive right now.Communication, the answer to all problems .

and Brian Edwards is way off the mark fretting about gender balance.

Kids need devotion and love from an adult who has

    1) an understanding of the extensive and vunerable wiring that is taking place in the heads of our kids.

    2) and wants to support that childs growth and maturity unconditionally.

That's the focus for me. A new generation of balanced adults.

  • Hard News: A voice of reason and authority,

Seriously though, I was watching Fox the other day (in Pittsburgh, PA), when on came this ad:

I can't believe a generation can call themselves "the greatest generation" without throwing up. That is just absurd ego. There is an idea out there that the world was created by and for one generation. We have lost our community goals in a blaze of new consumption and new fears. Tribal elders should be leaders not fearful frail isolated individuals fearing painful unheralded deaths.

Without China onboard any effort to reduce emissions cannot succeed, and China will never be onboard.

China may have a different social system to us but their scientists are constrained by the same truths as any scientist. As far as I understand 11 of the world's 15 largest cities are on the coast or estuaries and one of them is Beijing and the others are chinese trading partners.

A change in sea levels from melting ice caps and the flooding that will follow will be the end of their idea of a brave new economic world.

It's commonsense not to pollute, it has no long term benefits.

  • Hard News: A voice of reason and authority,

The current 'debate' about healthcare in the USA is causing a Very Special Ulcer in the 'how can this whole thing be so INSANELY STUPID?' part of my stomach

Ironically this is holding up the climate change debate that the U.S has to have, amongst quite a number of other major debates.

What I don't like about our timid and quite frankly half hearted emission goals is that we are trying to sneak a low position while the market is volatile.

But Obama is a scientific president, he'll slam global warming when he gets to it, maybe not by copenhagen but as his Peter Gluckman will point out to him , he has too!!!
