  • Hard News: Drugs, development and reality,

The Helena project appears to work by cutting out the 'middle man', i.e. the commodities markets where people like our glorious Prime Minister will trade both sides to death. In any of these cases of alternative crops, they are going to come up against subsidies and protectionism in the countries they need to export to. Thus, one hand giveth and the other taketh away. However, Helena Project shows that it can work at some scale.

  • Hard News: Poor Choices,

Charlotte's biggest 'public' problem was to be addicted to attention, in the form of having to be on TV and in magazines, while at the same time being petrified of it and then blaming others, e.g. New Zealand, for not loving her enough. It's little wonder she was misunderstood and very sad that it couldn't be reconciled for her in some way that avoided such a sad ending.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: The First Time,

Thank God there are a few other ancients here.
First School concert: Living Force I think.
First solo real concert: Bo Diddley ( I won tickets off the radio) at Auckland Town Hall which would probably have been early 70s. I had two older brothers who were the perfect chaperones. Aged about 12/13.
Soon thereafter: Canned Heat at Auckland Town Hall, and Santana/Sky Hooks at Carlaw Park (first experience of others smoking marijuana). I was 14.

  • Hard News: Bring on the Revival,

We too came through a print background and, while it is still a wonder what content can be found on the web, there is nothing quite like holding and reading a magazine or book. We subscribe to a surf magazine called The Surfer's Journal that survives on subscription and six full-page advertisements - four at the front, two at the back. All of the rest of the mag is editorial and beautifully presented. It can work but you have to have a USA-size market in which to find your subscribers. The amazing array of material available through e-publishing is a wonderful thing but what will we read when the power fails.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: The Next Kids,

Only just found out this week that George Duke was RIP in August this year. Who?
Not everyone loves Frank Zappa but I grew up on diet of his work and George Duke was keyboard/vocalist in possibly the best incarnation of Frank's band in the mid-70s. There is no good live version of Inca Roads that I can find on YouTube so this link is just to the audio. Feast yourself on the combined talents in this track and know that I am sad on the one hand but happy at the thought of the jam sessions in heaven now that George and Frank are back together.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: The Story,

There is something deeply wrong with me because I looked at and listened to every one of those sound and video tracks, and they just make me sad for the state of music/live entertainment. The entire scene appears to me to be about looking at everyone else and trying to get them to look at you. It reminds me of why I find it harder to enjoy live shows now because there are so many people trying to film themselves and the show on their smartphones so that they can upload their lives to Facebook. Actually taking time to appreciate the artistry of what is being presented is beyond them. Not that there is any great artistry in EDM. I really need to look at why I almost feel angry at seeing the seething masses of people with one arm in the air (the other holding drink or phone) and grinning stupidly at a man with his laptop open - yes, always a man. Obviously, I just don't get it. Sucks for me.
