One summer working a student job in a well-known bookshop chain I was subjected to the Priscilla Queen of the Desert soundtrack on endless loop, for what may have been the entire 2-3 months. Teeth grating ensued. It was eventually replaced - oh joy! - with the Gipsy Kings - oh noes! All together now: 'DOO do, do do de do do DOO doooo...'

Hard News: Fame Friday, in reply to
Since when has Sweden been a bastion of country-folk?
Since ages - they love their Americana up there. Part of the reason jazz is also so popular in Sweden; that, and seasonal affective disorder.

It lacks a certain piquancy when it's spelt 'minute' - a diminished verisimilitude, if you will. #pretentiouscommamoiquestionmark

The only good thing is that we are measured and we vote. Turn off and tell them you are turning off.
In operation for me at least for the last 10 years and still going strong. Doesn't seem to have had much effect, to be honest.
I did participate in a Roy Morgan TV ratings survey a few weeks ago and in one exercise they listed loads of programmes organised by channel and asked for viewer attitudes. 'Luckily', there was nothing on TV1 or TV2 that I was remotely interested in watching. There was so much more American crud than I remember when I used to watch those channels, and what little UK programming on offer was dire - I'm trying to think of an example... let's try Goodnight Sweetheart. (Old I know, but it's the sort of dross they'd be showing). There's so much great stuff on the BBC and Channel 4 that they could be screening instead, but don't get me started...

Am astonished that people carry out such vitally important and pivotal work that they cannot bear to leave their big glowing phones un-consulted during the movie. You sir: you with the iPhone or Android beacon-strength glare - turn your stupid toy off!
And while I'm on a grump gallivant, what's up with the clapping at the end of festival films? Unless the director or someone else involved with the project is actually present, surely it's just self-gratulatory smugness?

Hard News: Vanilla Buffalo Yoghurt, in reply to
Since it’s Friday: for anyone who hasn’t seen this wee charmer:
Great find Lilith!

I like to think that Vanilla Buffalo Yoghurt is the underrated third album by a Midwest indie band you probably haven't heard of.
I'm thinking Strawberry Alarm Clock. Off topic somewhat, has anyone noticed the prevalence of the word 'Buffalo' in band names? The Buffalo Springfield, Grant Lee Buffalo, and more recently Avi Buffalo. Are big hairy cows innately rock 'n roll?

Not a clip, but knowing PA is a fan I snapped this Ladi6 gig poster in East Berlin on Sunday. She gets around.

Returning to a previous Friday theme -- how many remixes of Adele's 'Rolling in the Deep' can there be?
Not a remix, but a commendable cover - here's the kidlings of the PS22 Chorus being talented 'n shiny:

Hard News: And we may never meet again ..., in reply to
On a side note, I was at a friends 50th party a few weeks ago. He had his decks set out and when he dropped the new James Blake single (Limit to your love) on brand new shiny vinyl and that big bass drop kicked in, we all fell about high-fiving like teenagers.
Cool! At the risk of (justifiably) being labelled a skite, I was lucky to see him perform it on Tuesday at the recording of this week's Later with Jools Holland. You could hear a pin drop in the studio - it was great. And it was slightly surreal to see R. Kelly (who is not, I dare say, a fine and upstanding gentleman, but anyway) nodding along to it from his allotted stage, 10 metres away. As for the other artists, Adele was as polished and appealing as expected. Here's a brief write-up; I'm looking forward to seeing the full-length hour tonight.
