  • Up Front: Somebody Think of the Young Adults!, in reply to Russell Brown,

that’s The Herald on Sunday, which has its own editors.

Fair point, I shall amend the post to make that clear. The Herald-Herald offered up this, for which they found it necessary to get a quote from sex-Voldemort.

    So, this?

    (Sorry.)

Pretty much. (I have such a clear picture in my head. He's wearing pink, and saying, "Dirty," in the most magnificent tone. I spent an hour looking for it this morning.)

  • Hard News: A Capital Great Blend (update), in reply to Stephen Judd,

It probably is about time we got together though. Anyone else interested?

Yes, very. I have been making these vague noises this very day.

  • Up Front: An Open Letter to the Labour…, in reply to Rob Stowell,

Not quite in the electorate (at the moment)

Mairehau should be acceptable, I think. It’s not like it’s Merivale or Cashmere.

Also. Matthew Hooten has backed Cosgrove. So… that happened.

  • Up Front: Another Brick in the Wall,

Today The Press has an article on the distribution of SACs funding.

The school that received the most taxpayer support for its students was King's College in Auckland - 24.4 per cent of its 180 students sitting NCEA exams got funding for special help.

Nationwide, about 60 per cent of decile 1 to 3 schools made no requests for assistance for their pupils

    So that's a picture of a needs-based system, right?

If you have to game the system to get help, that help is going to go disproportionately to the schools and families who have the resources and knowledge to do that. In Christchurch, UPT and StAC have more special-needs students than any of the school that have special-needs units? Really?

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks, in reply to BenWilson,

For my next hack, a picture is worth a thousand words. I can't believe I did it the hard way for so long.

We have one of those, and it's great. Not least because everyone in the family can use the same damn tin opener.

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks,

Oh! Pies. Particularly with lamb etc which can be fatty. Put a sprinkling of dry breadcrumbs between the pastry bottom and the filling. Stops the pastry going soggy, and the breadcrumbs basically dissolve in the fat so you can't tell they're there.

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks,

You know what's awesome? Pastry brushes. Not for brushing pastry, but for getting every bit of citrus rind out of a grater.

I keep a big ginger root in the freezer at all times. It's way easier to grate when it's frozen because all those long fibres just break. (Also apparently you can regrow a whole ginger root from a knob, but I've yet to try this.)

  • Up Front: An Open Letter to the Labour…, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

is there also a party vote attached to a by-election?

    No.

Who will the Greens put up?
Or will they use the Key/Banks playbook and ask their supporters to vote Labour?

This is an interesting question. The Greens don't pursue the candidate vote in general elections, but concentrate on the party vote. But they do have a candidate in the Ikaroa-Rawhiti by-election, so perhaps they will. Mikaere?

  • Up Front: An Open Letter to the Labour…,

I should note that with the first link in this column, Stuff have done that thing where they basically glue another article on the top of the old one, change the headline, but stick with the same URL and comments. I could say some words, but they would all be swears.

OTOH, the new article now starts with a sentence I honest-to-God thought was satire:

National will probably stand a candidate in a Christchurch East by-election but with low expectations of winning, Prime Minister John Key says.

"We've been ignoring you, and in all honestly, I think we're comfortable to keep on doing that."
