  • Up Front: Good Counsel, in reply to Islander,

who disagrees with the idea that counselling isnt routinely offered

None of the three times I've been put on SSRIs was counselling even mentioned.

I feel I should comment to justify my vote for the Bulls' jersey. I'm not voting for their home strip. I'm voting for their fabulous away strip. I think it's really brave and wonderful of them to play in bisexual pride colours.

Incidentally, I’ve forgotten who mentioned it, but keeping ginger in the freezer was an excellent tip. Thank you.

    You're welcome.

But the other part to this is the technology just shifts too fast to make any such system viable

Mitch Benn had a great tweet on this:

The government may be ENTITLED to close down porn traffic. I'm ENTITLED to hover six inches above the ground and I can't do that either.

  • Hard News: Community standards,

Ms. Naughty has a post on Tumblr's pornocalypse, from the point of view of a commercial pornographer who's just started using Tumblr and finds it... problematic.

The problem is this: in creating the Tumblr for Bright Desire, am I being “spammy”? Am I “not-so-nice”? I’m not putting affiliate links on that site but I am advertising my own paysite by posting gifs and pics from Bright Desire that I hope people will share. It’s a way of getting my site in front of people who might like my content. If I’m doing this for self-promotion rather than the simple “love” of sharing porn images, does that mean I’m violating the terms?

And consider this: the images I’m posting are licensed to me, chosen by me and authorized to be shared in what I consider to be a promotional manner. I also have the 2257 documents for those images.

Compare this with the millions of Tumblr porn blogs that post unlicensed, unauthorized, un2257′d images without so much as a link to where they came from. It doesn’t matter that their terms state you can’t post copyrighted content; Tumblr is built on stolen, unreferenced porn.

The British approach to porn is just fucking hopeless. This is a total failure to learn from their own "extreme pornography" legislation. This (assuming "this" is, as it appears to be, stopping adults looking at pictures of things adults do) can't be done well, but by God they're going to do it badly.

Boiling drinking water, right? So you boil it then leave it to cool in the pot, then decant into bottles?

Yes. Drinking water. Tooth-brushing water. All water you'll use in food preparation that won't otherwise be boiled. It's more than you'd think. It has to be boiled for three minutes to be safe, so the time it boils in a kettle? Not good enough. As a family of four we went through a stock pot a day, basically.

    And, finally, the Tramontina

Oh gods, I'm having deeply complicated near-physical yearnings for that thing. Mmmm....

The first year we were together-alone, when we were very poor, my partner bought me a meat tenderiser for my birthday. All our friends laughed and mocked. I LOVED it. The balance. The hand-feel. The side clearly designed for breaking the femurs of intruders. I can't remember the last time I used it, but I fucking love that thing.

Enormous stock-pots are essential. They're for boiling water after earthquakes. You're welcome.

  • Southerly: Getting There is Half the Fun, in reply to Graham Dunster,

Nah, it’s not that bad, as long as you’re not heading to Cairo or similar.

Ahahahahaha... yeah. The first half of the trip we've already booked, deposited, and paid for flights for, is in Egypt. It's our dream trip, and already postponed and abridged (Syria? Yeah, nah) once.

We're not leaving until just after Christmas. I'm assuming by then that Cairo will be an oasis of peace and democracy.

  • Hard News: Who else forgot to get married?, in reply to B Jones,

Isn’t a little outrage in order?

Honestly? I think it's too dumb for outrage. Mocking, sure, but outrage? Our society completely accepts children born "out of wedlock". They're not going to make any headway on that. Debate is not, in fact, raging. When I had my son, out of wedlock, in 1995, at 23, to a guy that, so far as my family knew, I'd pretty much just hooked up with, even my 80 year old aunt wasn't shocked. My extraordinarily conservative West Coast National-voting Catholic cousin wasn't shocked.

I've been condemned for a whole bunch of stuff in my time. No-one has ever mentioned my bastard children. I've had more shit about parenting while not-straight.

  • Hard News: Who else forgot to get married?, in reply to Tamara,

Our local school is middle class, decile 10 and so forth, and there are hardly any kids with double-barrel names. I’d love to know where all those other families are!

Our kids have my partner's surname, and my surname as a middle name. Pretty sure that's not uncommon.
