Hard News: What about that Welfare…, in reply to
The $50b figure is simply a lie,...
It is a pretty basic fact to "get right" if their report seeks to have any credibility. Statistical data is one area we could expect a reasonable amount of accuracy from a government-sponsored report. If they are prepared to lie about this, what else are they prepared to lie about, or fabricate, or evade?

8. If current trends in benefit receipt continue 16% of the working age population could be on a benefit by 2050.
Blatant scare-mongering. How relevant is this to their mandate? The report apparently says that "If changes were not made, the 356,000 working-age adults [currently] on a benefit would eventually cost the country $50 billion." Well if you gave each of them a very generous 50,000 per annum it would only tally 17.8 billion. How do they account for the other 31 billion?

I cant believe that the only option for the rescue services is to 'wait'. Dont mining authorities have plans in place precisely for these sort of events? Surely the build-up of toxic gases is not an unexpected eventuality? And yet one could be forgiven for thinking that this is the first time they have faced this problem. Over all the years that man has been mining has nobody figured out a solution to this problem? I am dumbfounded by the fact that there is no technological solution in the offing.

Hysterical.

Thanks for the replies Andre and DeepRed, but it still seems a little odd to me. Cant every employer claim they are creating jobs, or do we only bend to the will of the big employers who can take their jobs offshore?

What union worth its own salt forfeits the right to take industrial action? It's the only weapon most of them have.

Peter Jackson on Campbell Live tonight seemed pretty keen to paint this as a case of the big Australian bully thang. This makes me suspicious of his motives.

Let us not forget that John Key also gave Paul Henry an assurance that he would not choose Jeanette Fitzsimmons for Governer-General, whereas a professional would've told Mr Henry that every candidate gets judged on their merits and an announcement will be made in due course.

I guess this has scuppered Jim Anderton's shot at being Chch Mayor.
Why? Serious question...
Because there is nothing like the image of the 'Man-in-charge-of-a-crisis' to boost the ratings - just ask Rudi Guliani. If I was a conspiracy-theorist I'd say that Bob Parker engineered this earthquake with the help of the CIA and a buried nuclear bomb..

Christchurch mayoral aspirant Jim Anderton told CTV on Friday that it would take an earthquake for him to lose the election race against incumbent mayor Bob Parker.
what's the saying...never a truer word spoken in jest...?
