incantation that compels everyone to stop asking uppity questions about what the hell they're doing with public money
this is the thing, innit?
you would think that the CCC was the business-as-usual activity and the RWC would be some kind of "exception" funding, but apparently we're all so swept up in seeing minnows playing at the cake tin that we we should all just STFU.
you can't even argue "it brings $$ into the city". have you seen the streets during the carnival? the people who aren't nude have pockets stuffed with money.
-
OTOH, maybe there is some of this
-
zing!

Why is the Cuba carnival more important than books for all?
because at the CCC, people walk around in the nude.
my suspicion is the WCC is concerned about cost-blow-out for the RWC. a ciy councillor used to be my land-lady and she indicated pretty clearly that rates would be increasing in the near future to fund "stuff".

you see, this is where cat people and i differ. i had a cat run over by a bike - giving it a broken leg. i carried that damn cat and its cast to and from the litter box for weeks...
the second time it happened? the cat went to the big scratching post in the sky. who in the hell needs a three-legged cat, anyhow?
and thicksilver... we're thinking of getting a cat-door. but won't pay to have it put in, because the munter likely won't be able to work it. so far he's proof that being part-siamese does not guarantee smarts.

hah!! welcome to the dark side.
we've also acquired a cat. we named him quicksilver, because he darts, and talks a hell of a lot.
but... we've discovered that he animal is monumentally stupid.
so stupid we've renamed him thicksilver. it's working well.

re peak oil: those guys working on converting sewerage to biodiesel are smart cookies.
looks a lot like they'll be able to supply the majority of the nation's trucking needs off our poo.
land transport isn't really the worry with peak oil (IMHO), it's plastics. and jet fuel.

speaking of bryers, where's that arsehat mcvicar on this one?
hmmm?

Unless you're Greek, you can't run up continued spending with an ever-shrinking tax base.
or american.
seems like the grasshopper generation are voting themselves deferred debts pretty much world-wide.
better start toughening the wee man up for a life of productive work to pay it all back. he's only 18months, but he'll likely start needing to be at work by the time he's 8 or 10.

Well, spending on children's education has been cut, but at least they'll have roads of National significance [to whore themselves on as adults] for decades to come
will be interesting to see how many parents are forced out of work by the cuts to childhood education subsidies.
one of my workmates has decided against more children for that very reason.
pity you can't just let the little fckers out to roam around a paddock like you can your average equine investment.
