Hooked into a bit of itunes last night for the first time. The amount of stuff that is not available was surprisingly large....not even obscure stuff. I did manage to get Nick Cave's soundtrack to "the Proposition" for $10 tho.
Got a big glitch in the middle of one of the tracks so I am exploring the support avenue.
I would have thought that itunes would have a wicked back catalogue so I could get things that I've been keen to lay my hands on over the years but been put off by the import process/prices. I guess it was unrealistic to think that itunes NZ would have access to the catalogue from all the other itunes stores!...so much for effect of "the Long Tail", global purchasing power and all that...
Was also surprised to see that one of the Neil Young singles is $17.99 for a single track (..OK it's a 34 min track). -
What a fun can of worms! Next census I'm gonna put my ethnicity as "South Islander living abroad", rather being potentially tarred with the Wellingtonian brush.

Ex-colleague had something to do with the following....which is a bit less graphical than TVNZ's (and is not completely unintelligible if using a mobile browser)

Here's something for the telco obsessed/futurists....a bit of a change from the ISP bagging.
The independent regulator of the communications industry in the UK has published a collection of essays about communications in the next decade.

There's an old but informative article from Wired about the Long Tail, which uses the CD and DVD biz as an example. It also ponders the economics of big music companies and raises some interesting points/questions about music pricing.

What's up with the govt overruling the war crimes arrest?....something strikes me as a bit fishy, either that the govt has dipped it's oar into determining which laws are enforced when it's role I thought was to create legislation, or that there's some "funny" international politics taking place.

Have just failed in an attempt to initiate a thread (how does one do this these days?) about (presumably) a mate of Russell's called SJD, who put on a terrific gig last night with some of his pals. The gig was significantly better in my opinion that the tired old greatest hits gig that U2 put on (& I do like U2!!). Word from the ticket collector is that SJD's new album is due in March, which seems a stunningly long way away. The new songs that were played last night look to be every bit as good as his last effort (being the awesome Southern Lights).

There was an ipod/apple ad on the telly last night (approx 9pm on TV2) that featured "apple.co.nz".

Brash's comment to Noelle McCarthy this morning still rings in my ears....Why would the leader of a party that is ahead in the polls step down?

I found a couple of sites quite useful for customised information gathering. They're not NZ sites....until you start feeding them with NZ feeds.
From just over the ditch, Library clips is a damn fine site to pick up more than few ideas & tips about the way in which we create and consume information and the evloution of these activities.I'd been using a news aggregator called newzie for a couple of months to create a slideshow of new posts/articles. It's good for quickly reviewing whats changed among your feeds.
More recently I'd found customisable pages such as netvibes and feedraider which allow you to add your own feeds. Couple these with feedscrapers where a RSS or an ATOM feed is not part of the site and you've got what I think is a powerful way of keeping an eye on the sites that you're interested in.
