The subject of referendums was discussed at length yesterday but it was interesting to hear this morning that after the 1999 ref. Parliament decided that in future refs should be postal and not part of a Parliamentary Ballot.
This was supported by National at the time. -
Hiding behind Ministry of Justice advice is cowardly. She should tell the truth and admit that it is her intention to do all she can to avoid this referendum at the election for her own political reasons," said Mr Baldock.
There you have it folks. The real agenda has been revealed. The referendum is really about political influence from the subversive fundamentalists. And no-one said the referendum should be "buried." Just put it at a suitable time.

__We need some sort of punishment effect and it's not a nice feeling for the kid, but the kid was about to unload mayhem everywhere on everyone so we remove them from that state of mind__ .
Actually "time out" is not supposed to be a punishment as much as a chance to cool down. Probably it would be better for we the parents to take time out as so often we are the ones who lost our cool and over-react. And hit out in frustration!!

Matthew:
--enclose whatever you're quoting.--
I get it! Thanks

Graeme:"Yes, we know that you don't beat your children, and that children who are lightly smacked and no more turn out fine. However, there are some people who go too far, who use the defence in the law to do far far worse. There are children being injured and killed.... etc" (Dont know how to indent italisise previous quotes??)
I heard in the early days that the issue was quite clearly spelled out. Simple honest repeal. The clever (devious) people high-jacked the issue and it became, and is, the "Antismacking Law". Hence the petition wording.
I also heard in a radio interview that they would really like it to be a full "no smacking our kids at all!" just like in many European countries. But NZ was not ready for that so the Repeal was as far as we can go - for now. -
"*blink* First, perhaps there are always multiple issues on which the Government of the day (whatever colour rosette its wearing) should be embarrassed over."
Craig: Of course there are issues for which a Government should be held to account. But this issue is a devious murky one which is an underhand way of apparently caring about the family first but really manipulating people. There are so many countries that simply totally banned hitting kids. No debate. No reaction so why such an issue in NZ? -
I am with Gareth there. I suspect that behind the petition is a group who are using the issue to embarrass the Government. Therefore keep the ballot and the referendum as separate issues.

Makes me wonder about the attitude of some who demand the right to hit their kids. Don't they realize how fragile/robust a kid is? A fine piece of writing David. Thankyou.

"2 years ago Christchurch was New Zealands murder
capital. Most seemed to be street prostitution and
therefore drug related."
Shep you sound like Joanne Black. 2+2= 6 or 7!!!
And again:
"Yes Sikhs are classy, not so the reports of the young
wife being unable to remarry"
This is not so. You should check up on your Asian groupings. From my limited contact with policing I think that we are very lucky to have the Force that we have- warts and all!

Good one Che Libby. Remember the Dancing Cossaks that National had specially imported from Russia in the 70's ?
