  • Hard News: Not in front of the children,

Part of the reason why Henry is getting served over this now is a maturity of belonging and politics where the people he is demeaning and their associates are ready to say it's not ok. The context is influenced by other successes, by media coverage and the actions of public agencies including government and even the United Nations.

I really like this - it clarifies things for me. Paul Henry has not cottoned on to this context, perhaps? Or like many of his ilk he sees the hard won progress of minority groups as PC?

  • Hard News: Not in front of the children,

I did make the argument that we should mock the powerful, not the vulnerable.

You did indeed and I liked that but you appeared on his show and you were gentle on him. David, I don't know you but you seem to exude kindliness and humanity. So does Pippa Wetzell. Why don't you people just tell him where to get off?

  • Hard News: Not in front of the children,

Henry called one of Tiger Woods' alleged sexual partners a "cheap ... slapper" today. I think Pippa Wetzell demurred but why oh why didn't she remonstrate with him more strongly and why do she and Alison Mau sit there and smile through his insults.

I quite enjoy the dynamics of Breakfast (hate to admit it) but I think Henry could be taught about sensitivity to the feelings of groups to which he doesn't belong.

He also slagged off an actress who has just announced her lesbian status. It's a wonder he hasn't insulted Tamati yet.

Hypocritical of me because I watch it but I was disappointed that a smiling David Slack appeared on the programme last week.

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

The term PC is bothersome. What's the word? Pejorative? When people go on about PCness I often think back to the days of my youth when homosexuality was illegal, women were treated like shit and white supremacy was just well, normal.

There's still a reason for political correctness IMHO and it's to guard against the sort of hurt and discrimination you are outraged by, Craig.

I'm disappointed in Finlay MacDonald. I think he used to write in a more considered way but the SST columnists seem to have to stir up a reaction by overstating their opinions. I consider the Grammar boys' actions to be pretty damn awful but also a very interesting manifestation of changing times and therefore almost worth a media storm.

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

I know you are arguing about whether the Nazi's were efficient and effective or not but the below has come up in the SST.

What do you think of Finlay MacDonald's opinion piece on the Museum Nazi prank?

Me, I just wonder what happens to people when they start to write columns for the SST.

Meanwhile, under the new curriculum the big question currently being studied throughout the school is within the area of biology and there are seeds sprouting in classes all over, compost making going on ...

    I love this.

Back to the "othering" of races ... I think the Asian community leaders have a right to demand some sort of clarification here.

I have just seen the Media 7 segment on the stem cell therapy. Very interesting. Great television. The experts got to talk without interruption and develop their arguments.

The weird thing is, even by the lights of homeopathy, that shouldn't work. Having someone grab a spray off the shelf and take it to the till is hardly taking account of the whole person.

What do you think of pharmacies having shelves of homoeopathic remedies then?

And even if the "whole" person is considered, how can the watery substance have any effect at all - unless the ailment is psychosomatic?

Wouldn't it be more honest for homoeopathy specialists to set themselves up as counsellors if listening is all they're really doing?

And my husband got a big growling. Don't tell me that's why it didn't work!!

The question is: if alternative treatments are so great, why is it that despite fairly massive amounts of money being poured into testing by places like the NIH, there has never been clear-cut evidence of a direct, better-than-placebo effect?

I agree Lucy. If we substitute homeopathy for "alternative treatments" would that be more acceptable to those who argue against you?

I thought homeopathy had been pretty much 100% discredited. How can something work if there are no active ingredients? As for GPs, I've always found mine sympathetic. I could always book a longer appointment if I wanted a more thorough hearing. It would probably be cheaper than an "alternative" practitioner.

I feel that patients should demand information, do their own research and know what treatments and drugs involve. I think I am more likely to get a sensible answer from a doctor rather than a herbalist etc. If I am not happy with my doctor's diagnosis I can ask for a second opinion.

I'm always distressed when I see shelves of homoeopathic remedies in a pharmacy because - well - I thought pharmacists would be more scientific. My husband asked for a spray for nasal congestion and was sold a very expensive homeopathic inhaler by the pharmacy assistant. It didn't work. He didn't realise what it was when he bought it.
