I'd just like to say that Kyle Matthews knows his football punditry. Just saying.
Anyway Gio; think of it this way. Rugby sides all round the world get pissed off at the way that All Black open-side flankers (well before the current master) have played the laws to the limit.
That's how we've always played it, we're good at it, and so be it.
Italian football is much the same.
For what it's worth what's annoyed me more over the years with Italian sides is the sitting back on early leads. Fortunately, that didn't happen last night; it was a great spectacle.

What did I tell you people about Fallon and his elbows? I’d “rest” him for the Paraguay game, but just because I think he’s a liability.
@Gio; Kewell and the video was brilliant. That’s what playing for Liverpool does to you.
BTW; what’s the bet that if it does come down to a coin toss between NZ and Italy for the knockout stages FIFA will have a special coin prepared earlier?

Another factor to remember tonight. By my count at least 4 matches so far have been on the issuing of a red card.
That's quite a high proportion really.

Agree with Gio that it's really hard to pick simulation at the time. And I don't think you want referrals during the match. Football prides itself on its lack of stoppage time, and rightly so.
But what they should do is post-match appeals (like the judiciary in other sports).
And seriously throw the book at them.

The match against Uruguay will be a test of Mexico’s ambitions. Normally they’d take a Round of 16 finish, but this side’s been hyped up as something special and they’d fancy themselves with a Sth Korea knockout match.
Having said that; watch Uruguay park the bus.
Maradonna might have the manner of a demented goblin, but how good have Argentina been?
Talk of problems in the Socceroo dressing room (and surely the same must be going on with France). Probably happening with the Netherlands too, but that never seems to bother them.
Germany have been the surprise for me. And not having Ballack has probably done wonders for their dressing room.
And Spain choking a fortnight early; hadn’t picked that.

Elliott was good. You can tell that by the way the Slovaks worked out that he was the guy to hack.
We played our best football in the last 15 minutes when we actually shelved Route 1 and started playing it through the middle. That’s when Nelsen really took hold of the match.
BTW, I do wish someone up high would tell Fallon to stop using his elbows like that.

@PD,
The other way we can score is via a set piece.

One could reminisce about France v. W. Germany 1982, or France v. Brazil 1986, or Cameroon v. England in 1990... there have been some good games.
Yet very few great finals (1986 probably being the best in my lifetime)
Other great matches: USSR v Belgium 1986. Holland v Argentina and Brazil 1998, and the drama of Eng v W Germany 1990.
Agree with the original post about Spain. Going in as favourites is doing them no favours.
@Mike H. Brilliant.

OTOH... has the Dominion Post ever been right about anything?
Fair call.
I’m just amazed they failed to bring Seripisos into the story somehow

One thing: why do we need this “Cup Village” when we’re already got Courtenay Place?
And Cuba St for that matter
