I still remember the day--back when I was young and idealistic--that I first saw television coverage of a protest I had been involved in. I was utterly astonished (and quite upset) that the portrayal bore no resemblance to events as they had actually occurred.
Excellent education though. Maybe protesting and then studying subsequent media coverage should be added to the curriculum.

It's exactly that kind of self-help nonsense the Listener routinely puts on its cover that means I no longer buy the magazine. And I come from a long line of Listener buyers.
Of all the vast array of things in the world I'm interested in, Maggie's weight loss is definitely not one of them. Nor is the latest in age-defying cosmetic surgery, nor how I can stretch my middle class income to buy an investment property while still being able to afford ballet lessons for my 2.4 children.
And Ken Ring? Seriously? Too much alcohol at the office Christmas party?

Most will deal with that lack of information well, but inevitably human psychology kicks in when dealing with a particularly aggravated individual andthe rep will simply make stuff up to buy themselves some breathing space.
Hey, no aggravation here, until we're quite obviously lied to (and as a first response). And even then it is expressed privately and not to a helpdesk worker.
Again it comes down to the customer being in the wrong huh?

We're not with Telecom, but it annoys me no end that the standard helpdesk response to any broadband problems is, "Oh, it's at your end." No, we have two fairly computer-savvy people living here and it is not at our end. And no, re-entering the configuration data will not suddenly make our connection work when your service is down over the whole area.
I'd respect them a whole lot more if they'd just tell the truth.

And Syd Barrett's things are being auctioned off.
There's something very sad about seeing someone's things being sold off--particularly the handmade or customised furniture, and the scrapbooks and notebooks.
I can only hope I go out in a fiery meteorite explosion so no-one gets to paw over my stuff.

I learnt of peripatetic by way of the Peripatus, which would receive my vote as Insect of the Year, were there such a thing (scroll down to the mother with her babies and tell me that isn't the cutest thing you've ever seen).
-
Well don't I feel dumb. I've always read it as "porned" (why not "pawned" I'm not sure).
Fortunately I don't move in the kind of company where such things are ever said aloud.

Katherine Rich not wanting credit for the welfare speech?

Well, in my professional and deeply considered opinion, John Key is icky.

I feel a bit sorry for Dawkins really. Leaving behind a career in something as fascinating as evolutionary biology just to get his panties tied in a knot over religion? He's either addicted to the bitch fight or a true martyr.
