What do you reckon? He has trollish spells of commenting on his own comments, but then someone responds and I'm unwilling to cut off the exchange. I could just ban him, but it doesn't seem quite right.
It's a fairly stationary brick wall, if people choose to bang their heads against it, so be it. If it became the sort of brick wall that keeps jumping out in front of you, then it might be time to break out the jackhammers.

Emma-- if it's just about getting customers to a business, then of course, you're absolutely right. But might it be possible that some businesses require some parking space close at hand for delivery vehicles?
The guys were definitely talking about customers, not deliveries. And their business was a gents' hairdresser of the type lovingly patronised by Dr Haywood. They're on Riccarton Rd, which ironically most Christchurchians avoid like the plague if they can, because of the traffic.

but these people are idiots. they're premising their ability to attract shoppers on parking, which is premised on shoppers noticing their business as they drive past at 50km/hr.
This boggles me. We had a couple of local businessmen bitching in the paper the other day about the council's plan to remove two parking spaces (count 'em, two) to put in a bus stop. They seemed to think that their business was contingent on people being able to park right outside their shop. Obviously there's some flaw in my 'more people on one bus than in two cars' theory that I can't see.

Oh Grant, that's beautiful. That's just wonderful, it's been ages since I've been exposed to argument of this quality. You make broad sweeping judgemental statements about hugely personal issues, but if anyone brings their own personal experience to counter that, to add some humanity, they're still wrong because it's too personal to talk about. I am in AWE.
I judge because I am alive. Why do you consider people capable of not judging?
You know what I do because I'm human? Empathise. I feel for people in difficult situations that I haven't personally experienced. Ever done that?
I know that you paint a picture in order to evoke sympathy. I know there are poor people. It's not a crime to have little money. It's not a crime to do some hard work. It is a crime to steal.
The Victorian history lesson is completely wasted on you, isn't it? Otherwise I'd suggest you read Engel's Conditions of the Working Class, and duct-tape your mouth shut until you've finished it. Stephen wasn't talking about 'having little money', he was talking about a situation where you could have five members of a family working 15 hour days and still be so poor they couldn't afford enough food, fuel, or a place to live where raw sewage didn't run down the walls when it rained.

It's tragic that you can be so callous about a thing so sensitive, Emma. My reaction to you would be to tell you how inappropriate you actions are and why.
Grant, you don't know me at all, although you feel you have the right to judge me. I'm not callous. But the situation, about which you know almost nothing, was not simple. I suspect situations like that are never simple.
What I don't understand is why you feel compelled to judge at all.

I'll up you one, Grant. I'm an adulterer. How intolerant of me do you think that justifies you in being? Do you think I should have been imprisoned? Who would that have benefitted?
It's not something I'm proud of, but it's not something I'm ashamed of, either. My ex-husband is happily remarried with a kid he adores. I've been with my partner for the last fourteen years - if you include the time I was married to someone else. We adore each other and our kids and I wouldn't give them up for anything.

I think it's pretty clear the answer is 'no'. You clearly agree with yourself a lot, but that wasn't your point. You think 'do not commit adultery' is a fundamental, I think 'butt out of my private life and mind your own business' might be a fundamental, if I hadn't found life entirely made up of shades of grey and pretty much devoid of black and white.
