Meanwhile the court case continues in the High Court about three adult men incarcerated for years because of issues relating to their intellectual disability/autism. I've dropped in a couple of times to see what is happening and it is fascinating to see how the arcane world of law operates.

By the way the current Maori Party are allies in seeking disability rights.

I’ve had a bit of a moan today about the Maori Party’s active role in the removal of disability rights in the 2013 NZ Public Health and Disability Amendment Act No 2. Their support enabled the bill to pass. An act that specifically removed complaints under the Bill of Rights Act. What’s more they later lied and claimed they had not supported it. So much for the moral high ground – one lot of rights is apparently more important than another.
But having said all that I also believe in restorative justice so why can’t there now be some sort of facilitated apology/acknowledgement process between Helen Clark and the Maori Party?

Lots of disability rights talk in Hillary's speech. It's not patronising either. Caring is not enough, you need activism as well, seems to be her message. OK with me. And I never though I would will ever hear a chant of HI LA RIE

Pretty amazing speech by Obama. His words and delivery are so good. Such good theatre too. At the end Hillary came on the stage for an endorsing hug.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we had such orators among our political leaders. -
Very interesting assessment on the role of disability activism and changes over time at DNC. Lots more focus this time, including disabled speakers. Hillary Clinton apparently started her career by fighting to get disabled kids into school.

Hard News: DNC 2016: Beyond weird, most…, in reply to
For some forgotten reason I got on the Democrats mailing list. I get several emails a day telling me about the importance of voting, how to encourage everyone else to vote, how to buddy up with others to vote, surveys of latest voting intention, including personal messages from a range of influential people.
So I think they are well aware of that.

Yes thank you for writing this, and sorry for your loss.
In the 1970s heroin (and other drug use) was pretty common. Not by me (I have often been the odd one out). Overdose was a constant risk and we often had to support various flatmates to keep them upright and conscious and slowly the effects wore off. We were forbidden to call an ambulance, because of the illegality of the cause. They eventually grew out of that activity and became ordinary and usually successful citizens with (perhaps) Hep C as the only legacy.
But although none of my flatmates died at that time, I knew some people who did. All young, bright and so tragic. One friend in his early 20s was just lovely, so sensitive and creative.
Your post has caused me to remember them again. Four decades on. Never forgotten.

Michelle followed by Elizabeth Warren. Enough to cheer many an old lefty feminist.

Wonderful speech by Michelle Obama. I wish she was standing.
