The downstairs coffee bar in the University Union in Dunedin had an espresso machine in the 1960s - but they sold filter coffee.
I used to frequent the Van Dyke (downstairs in George Street, just round the corner from the Octagon. Long gone), and the Little Hut (downstairs further along George Street, and still there) in the 1960s, and I'm sure they both served espresso coffee. Coffee culture in Dunedin is older than you think.

Rogerd, the Snell rating may not be a good indication of helmet safety. Have a read of this:http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/motorcycle_helmet_review/index.html

The Starfish Bar in St Clair also has Emersons on tap.

For me the amusing thing is not knowing if this is what is in the book, or a wind-up. Given Wishart's obsessions, it could be either....

The southern burrrr seems to be a recent thing - my wife, who grew up in Invergargill, never had it. Her father, a lifelong southlander, who died a few years ago in his 80s, spoke like Anthony Hopkins playing Bert Munro. My youngest brother in law, however, speaks with a burrrrr.
Since returning to Dunedin, I have noticed that some of my Dunedin nephews also have the burr.

To go from the sublime to the ordinary - I have yet to find the Dunedin equivalent of La Porchetta for a cheap pasta meal, or Pete's Pies for inexpensive pie chips and salad..although there is a pie shop called "Who Ate All The Pies" 5 minutes walk from where I live that makes divine, but expensive, pies.....

Perhaps you could provide evidence FOR the existence of the paranormal, Neil. And then, you could visit James Randi's website, and claim US$1,000,000.
