On the same general topic: if anyone hasn't seen it, Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo is a completely 'new media' site, broadly focussed on US political news from left-of-centre. It's grown from one-man-blogging to a staff of about 20, I'd guess. Much of the appeal is the editorial comment - ranging from very insightful to bitingly sarcastic. In a vastly larger market, they've developed a subscriber model over the last two or three years - for stability and to supplement (what must have once been considerable, but is now likely declining) ad revenue. Here's the TPM pitch for subscribers.

Legal Beagle: Update: Into the River, in reply to
for over 5 months after being given additional public prominence by the award win the book could be read, sold, shared and displayed completely free from any restrictions … yet the Board was still able to give it an R14 rating. … how would two-or-three months of free availability now prevent the Board from doing likewise?
Because then there’d be even more real evidence Into the River being freely available hasn’t harmed society and the sky hasn’t fallen?

what does it say about us if Scout is a success?
There's no doubt the values and identity of the nation have been moulded by 30 years of neoliberal thinking and framing. And there's no doubt people like gossip.
But let's not declare defeat too quickly.
National have done things that are 'left-wing.' Surely that's because their focus-groups and polling indicate it will be well-received by the mainstream.
So far TV3's ditching of Campbell, and replacement line-up of fluff and nonsense has been a ratings disaster.
What does that say about us? :) -

I think it also shows how limited Glucina’s reach is.
Spanning almost the entirety of Auckland's National Party elite :)

It's clear there's not going to be much pretence here. It's nakedly National. Unashamedly gutter. Happily shallow. Whalefluff?

And goodbye Tony Abbot. Ozzie comics may rue the day. We're unlikely to ever see your budgie-smuggling sentence strangling eye-rolling like again ...

her using their new toy to promote nonsense gossip about their main competitor’s star attraction?
It's a little curious. Hosking probably rang, they discussed the new show, she was stuck for an exclusive, he said - if you're desperate, and you've got a stringer handy, I'll pop out to vacuum my Italian dream car.
Oh how they chuckled. -

Actual lolz that Stuff’s story is basically 400 words based on celeb tweets.
There’s a serious undertone, I thought. I get the sense Mediaworks news staff are pretty deeply unhappy. I’d be surprised if Jennings doesn’t feel extremely queasy about ‘Scout’.
There’s an ‘End of Days’ feel about TV3 at the moment. Unlike Christie and Weldon, I think Jennings has the character to go down with the ship.
