The stuff story has substantially changed. Semems mediaworks finally scraped together a comment.

I can't even gloat. It feels like a savage and unrestrained vandalism destroying tv3 from within. Every move a clanger. Good people thrown about like dolls. Wicked people taking all the power and money and leaving behind wrecked lives. :(

There's an over-view of NZ communes at Te ARA.
When my parents emigrated from the US to NZ (in 1962) we lived for a time at Beeville. Early days for hippies. But hippies come in all shapes and sizes :)
There's also a 1975 photo-and-essay book on NZ communes called 'A Hard Won Freedom' The view from 1975 was quite different.
And a (slightly-related) wonderful read is 'The Double Rainbow' which chronicles Baxter's Jerusalem, and the aftermath. -
And even 'tea partiers' are supporting Sanders
(It's not just castigating the banks - it's the sort of 'nationalism' that says no to the TPPA, no to war-mongering, and instead proposes to spend a trillion dollars on infrastructure in the US - creating US jobs and rebuilding decrepit public works.) -
Maybe the tide is changing?
Trudeau, who has re-energized the Liberal Party since its devastating electoral losses four years ago, promises to raise taxes on the rich and run deficits for three years to boost government spending.

Polity: Political strategy and Canada’s NDP, in reply to
Yeah - whatever NDP did it doesn't seem to have worked at all. I'm getting the impression it's their voters moving to the Liberals that have been the biggest swing.
Sorry Rob, it's not working to script.
Watching things in the US is interesting. Sanders may not be winning, but he's definitely moving the conversation - which, I think, is a good deal of his ambition. It might seem odd, but demonising the 1% and the banks appeals to at least some Republicans. (warning: Facebook link) -
I had a good forties. It's possible :) I'm looking forward to feeling happier later, though. The 50s so far haven't been terrific.
the State can’t really do much
You might be interested in 'What About Me?: The Struggle for Identity in a Market-Based Society' It's wide-ranging (so far - I haven't finished it!) in considering the ways society creates identity, and what a market-based society does to individuals.

Polity: TPP, eh?, in reply to
Yes, feels like they couldn’t frame Roger Rabbit :(
RNZ leading? their bulletin and repeating inside ‘Labour *supports* the TPP despite … ’ I listened carefully, and didn’t hear Little say ‘support’ even once. He just said they were unlikely to pull out.
