  • Hard News: Friday Music: The Story,

    "there are no orchestras"

and thank goodness for that - there are a few moments on the album when I feared the introduction of a string section... just not needed given the sparse soundtrack her voice inhabits

    Cheese On Toast nails it:

"Royals is how most people came across Lorde and it remains one of the best pop song’s written. In 10-20-30 years time your kid’s kids will know this song. Mark my words"

    She is simply just fab!

Next week is her best shot at the number one slot in the USA, according to more informed minds than mine - I hope she gets there and then the album follows suit...

  • Hard News: No Red Wedding,

pleased to see Ardern take arts as well.. and most changes seem generally positive - now for them to pull as a team, for the betterment of the nation not selves

NRT's take, is interesting, as it possibly explains some areas of potential weakness http://norightturn.blogspot.co.nz/2013/09/a-signal-to-greens.html

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Dancing Fool,

oh cool cheers for the zip file!

I like dance music and all things associated with that... but I rarely dance... I'm a foot tapper head mover but not a let it all out kinda guy (repressed white guy styles)

Today I've been desk sitting (dancing in my world) to this Greg Wilson set, which kicks off with a yet to be released track entitled Keiths Two Teeth on Auckland label Huhu (they doing good stuff)

In my time pushing play on record players in clubs I aimed my sets at getting people to drink more, dance if you want to but I want my crowd well lubricated... easiest way to do this was to play music they didn't like but I did, needless to say I wasn't booked that often

  • Hard News: Game Lorde,

"Tickets for her debut London show – at Madame JoJo’s next Tuesday – sold out in just four minutes. Not that Ella seems overly fazed by any of this.

“It’s a bit weird,” she shrugs down the phone. “[New Zealanders are] quite self-deprecating people in general. I was on this radio show and they were like, ‘You sold out your LA show, that’s amazing,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, but the venue’s not very big!’”

as a Kiwi I expect and am usually rewarded for cost benefits of "vital" services to be passed onto offshore interests... indeed so much so that I expect some of my taxes to subsidise such

  • Hard News: Game Lorde,

America is another world (charts), from billboard:

Sixteen-year-old New Zealander, and current Billboard magazine cover act, Lorde blasts 8-3 on the Hot 100 with her breakthrough U.S. single “Royals.” The track wins top Digital Gainer honors for a fourth time in five weeks, vaulting 8-2 on Digital Songs (225,000, up 34%). It reaches the top 10 on Streaming Songs (12-8; 4 million, up 40%) and lifts 17-13 on Radio Songs (72 million, up 26%).

Aided by its support at alternative radio, “Royals” rules Hot Rock Songs for a second week. It tops the Alternative Songs airplay chart for a fifth week, tying Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” (1995) for the longest domination on the ranking for a song by a solo female. (Browse Billboard’s 25th anniversary celebration of the Alternative Songs chart’s all-time top songs and top artists.)

This is exciting… and not long to wait to see what and how well the album will be greeted in larger markets.

  • Hard News: Game Lorde, in reply to Samuel Scott,

interestingly or not... if you read the various comments from US fans on youtube and other places Lorde has popped up there is a theme of calling her alternative - which she is if you consider her career path. No disney years learning to smile on cue... nothing. Nor was she developed via radio / TV, ie the traditional route for a "pop" act - rather US radio is only now catching up.

She's fresh, new.... and a breath of fresh air to many - so to a person in America (or elsewhere) she's well alternative - not stylistically as in 90s college rock et al (hate the term alternative I might add) but in that she's not been over marketed, hyped and groomed to an inch of her life like her peers

So saying that its not surprising a kiwi would think the same, given they too can see similar comments
