Don't get me started on unwritten rules. The stupid "let's kick it out when someone falls over" unwritten rule cost West Ham the 2006 FA Cup final.

Even worse, I'm pretty sure it was Steven Gerrard rolling around on the ground in the final minute of the game. The Hammers kick it over the side line just in their half. Now, the Liverpool player should have thrown it in to the goalie to return the ball to play (stupid unwritten rule) but instead fires into no man's land near the goal line on the edge of our box, with Liverpool players chasing. Poor old Lionel Scaloni has to react sprinting to clear but his kick only succeeds in going towards the middle of the park where, surprise surprise, Gerrard (fecker) is now up on his feet and fires a thunderbolt into the back of our net forcing the game to extra time.

We were about 30 seconds away from our best result in 30 years until those cheating Mickeys used an unwritten rule to rob us.

    Not that I'm bitter...

  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

Clearly the Listener content would be pretty useless for it.

Are you trying to say you wouldn't like a beautifully presented application in which to read Karl Du Fresne's and Deborah Hill Cone's musings? Come on..

  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

Also, you know who's doing really well out of the existing ad-funded model? The Daily Mail. I can see why. The content may be trite and offensive; the site's well sticky.

Heh, I'm pleased you mentioned this. To my shame I found myself going back again and again to the Mail coverage during the World Cup. Naturally, for the post-England hysteria, as always, but they far and away had the best quality collection of images for all the big matches, and they were available very quickly after the games. They really are doing some quality work there.

I presume it's because Mail readers want to look at famous people in their underwear and swimming togs that they've gone the extra mile but it works really well for sports coverage too.

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

My new GP and I have worked out that my vastly improved exercise regime was also a problem, because I wasn't rehydrating well enough after riding.

So we shouldn't be backing up those 30 km pushes over hill and track with several pints of strong ale then?

    Best tell Simon...

  • Hard News: Wanna Route?,

What started out as semi-regular 30 min rides has become 2-3 hours daily and she’s now completely and (seemingly) irretrievably addicted to it – to the point where if she doesn’t get out on her bike daily she actually gets extremely irritable and moans like crazy about “missing out”. This is a woman, just turned 41, who never did any exercise at all – nada, no jogging, gym, just the odd beach walk – but cycling has completely transformed her into this mean, lean, fitness machine.

Hate to break this to you Mike, but your partner's having an affair with a Trance DJ. Life sucks sometimes...

Heh, look at all these middle aged men with their cycling bidnezz!

Ok, me too, but I mainly stick to the country sealed and gravel roads out the back of Brightwater and Wakefield in Nelson. I don't like the iPod bobbling around too much to wreck my noise reduced playlist action, and I'm a softie.

Suffice to say though, it's cycling heaven on the tracks around here including Wairoa and Aniseed Valleys, Rabbit Island and the Brook and Maitai Valleys in Nelson.

Loads of info on the tracks here:

  • Hard News: The Munter and the Munted,

Our 15 year old boy loves the show and we've sat through the last few seasons of OF bonking together but my partner found Pascal's rubbing one out last night the most embarrassing scene to sit through together.

Me, I was more disturbed that he had no issues with the blow up doll scene...

  • Speaker: KICK IT! The Faces of the Defeated,

Agreed, it was a good chance to spend a few weeks chatting about footie. Thanks to Russell and Hadyn for letting us do it.

So, who's going to do the rugby one next year? :)
