  • Cracker: Fiji Baby,

    Damian -

I can only appluad the wisdom that allowed you to choose not to run. There is supposed to be a smidgin of enjoyment involved. Others are not so smart.

FWIW. If you do have long-term mechanical difficulties that make running unpleaasant I highly reccomend Kelly at AUT. The running clinic is the only one of its type I have ever come across and is a complete one-stop shop, being affiliated with a school of Physiotherapy and of Podiatry. Not cheap but highly reccomended by a number of people who have done a fair few miles.

  • Hard News: Body image and the media,

Germane to the earlier discussion about body image is this paper written by a fellow whom I hold in high regard. The thrust of it being that the bigger the descrepancy between perceived and ideal body shape the less likely you are to do something about it. Note also the subtle scope of the interpretation and points made; this is a very complex issue to research these days.

  • Southerly: Still a Scientist at Heart,

    Dear Dr Haywood

I am delighted to read of your recent research and dilligent efforts to extend our knowledge in this area. It is indeed good to know that a lawnmower is somewhat more effective than a stick at deflecting the attentions of Bees. I look forward reading further research undertaken by you in this field. Have you any plans to explore similar hypotheses with hornets ?

    Kind regards

  • Cracker: Mo' Better Reason,

    <semirhetorical>

    Question 1.

Does it look better to run at the start or at the finish ?

    Question 2.

People always go too fast at the start - so when would be the best time to walk ?

    Question 3.

What plans have you made in order to enjoy the run/walk ?

  • Hard News: Dunce Dunce Revolution,

Flexible resourcing - Reducing constraints on staffing ratios, class sizes, staff deployment and the structure of teaching programmes. For example, research shows that smaller class sizes are a relatively expensive and ineffective option, although there can be benefits for disadvantaged children in the early years of schooling if very small classes can be sustained for several years.

From treasury document "Challenges and Choices New Zealand's Long-term Fiscal Statement" (2009)

John Whitehead has probably over simplified this:

    1) He fails to acknowledge the evidence about the consequences of increased class sizes.
    2) He fails to apply the well regarded caveat advanced by Hattie that small class sizes don't work if you teach in a big class way.
    3) This view depends entirely to the metrics that you apply to success which is a good deal more subjective than applied here.

I note with some irony that Whitehead was educated at a time when Universities had substantially smaller class sizes, perhaps he would like to see what large class sizes have done to University education ?

I worry that this is just the sort of ammunition that NACT need:

I can't wait for the 'we could cut education or "une autre chose" 'replace with ACC healthcare pensions etc.

It all seems a little short sighted, I wonder where he got his education advice from ?

  • Hard News: Dunce Dunce Revolution,

On a lighter note I have been working with one of the many advisors that the present government found superfluous. What a pleasure it has been; I fully intend to try and deny the government the services of this advisor when the time comes. I would not let such a highly regarded colleague go so easily.

crystallised intelligence, as opposed to fluid intelligence

And therin lies the rub, Cattell like so many others devised an arbitrary concept around which he built a test. It could so easily have been crystallised intelligence, fluid intelligence and other intelligence. As such the definition of this construct was drawn for the most part from Cattell's knowledge of American eductaion and society and thus is Socially defined. Consequently we have a test that describes differences in society without providing any means through which to understand how or why they came about (that's the bit that involves theory). I maintain the opinion that IQ tests and such are worse than lazy they are inherently bigotted when employed for inter-personal comparison; Ironic given Cattell's latter day status.

How strange is this business ?

Simon & Binet first propsed intelligence testing as a diagnostic alternative to phrenology.
