I know that 'they' want people not to drink at all if they are going to drive, but the guidelines are pretty iffy and the blood-alcohol level can vary according to a number of factors but there is no accurate means of determining if one is on the wrong side of the line.
We have to have accurate speedometers to ensure that we don't overly transgress the advertised speed limits, but there is no similar assistance to accurately guage one's legal alcohol status. As someone who was once 'done' for being over the limit and who never wants to get 'done' again but who also enjoys a social drink I hate the uncertainty. It means I have to forego the sociable pleasure of a beer with mates purely because I have no way of measuring my blood alcohol.

I have hazy recollections of very different crowds at The Hydro and at The Grosvenor back in the early/mid 70's, but that's the full extent of my Timaru drinking. (Apart from the time I was stranded in Timaru after sneaking out for a wee kip and all the others went back to Twizel in the van without bothering to find/wake me. I forget what hotel we were staying in...)

I am deeply, deeply anti any 'monetised' carbon trading scheme or carbon tax system. In my (admittedly senile and limited) mind this is just the creation of a market whereby some people will make money based on some sort of "carbon go round". It fails to directly address the underlying problem (anthropogenic global warming) and it seems to me that its indirect effect will only slightly impinge on it.
Those industries (in the western world) that can afford to will absorb the cost without reducing emissions; similar developing countries will either not join or will seek reduced rates and the overall effect will be a very small decrease in emissions globally, but a great increase in wealth for some people/organisations involved in the administration of the scheme.
i.e. to me it just seems like a rort.

With regard to the extensive options available for incoming television broadcasts, can anyone point me in the direction of a reputable(?) commercial operation in Auckland that would be willing to visit our home and take readings of signal strength, etc and provide some decent advice on what componentry and in what configuarion would optimise our televisual entertainment?

We are in the Waitakeres with some dodgy signals, working off direct UHF for the 'main' channels and a soon-to-be-defunct Sky-UHF set-up.
I am expecting to be told that it will be expensive and require digital/satellite broadcast reception, but not knowing what would work in situ means I don't really know where to start when considering an upgrade.

I tend to take it as a situation where "you come into our house, you act like one of us" .
Having said that, I don't contribute to other blogs or talkboards and am more than happy with the way PAS works.

Sounds like there's a case to be made for PAS to rise up & take control of the country.
There's plenty of PASers that sound like they would be wonderful at running the country.(Before the DIA come a knockin', that was not a Call To Arms.)

Having something on your optic nerve that has to be 'kept an eye on' sounds contorted, but I guess you are used to a bit of contortion.
And I bet the Germans have a specific word (probably about a dozen syllables) for the kind of scary relief you get when it sounds really serious but turns out not to be as threatening as you immediately thought.
