Me and (Mrs Me) are heading over to Melbourne for a couple of nights to see the Dali exhibition and celebrate our wedding anniversary. Can't really afford it, but how many times in your life do you get the chance to see that many Dali's in a single show? And she deserves a couple of nights away, larging it.

I left varsity at the arse-end of '76 with a zoology degree & post-grad diploma and have never used them. Went travelling, etc and I think, as someone already mentioned, the fact that i had a degree & could stick with something probably helped get a job at some stage, but I've been a code-monkey for some time now and it looks increasingly like my zoology will remain an 'interest'.
Funnily enough, I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.

I don't doubt that, in cars, hands-free is safer than not, but that removing that distraction altogether is safer still. But the politicos realise that banning all distractions will not work, and that banning hands-free telephonic communication would be effectively impossible to enforce. Hence the pragmatic decision to restrict in-car use to hands-free.
I am not getting into the perception of the place of science in policy, or of the coverage of science. Let others who care more and have something useful to say have the floor on that one.

I think we should agree that 'real world' is what happens to oneself. Anything you personally are not involved with might not be 'real world'. So we all have our own real worlds.
Seems fair enough in an infinite number of universes.

Kyle, you seem to be assuming that all cell-phone users will convert to hands-free in their cars. Is that a valid assumption? (Happy to concede that it might get an 80% uptake.)

And I suspect that Keith Richards stays alive purely to piss Mick off.

Emma, I am not sure that world-record sprinting counts as the real world . It's not something that ever happens to me - does it happen to you?
-
Isn't that tantamount to (whisper it now) abuse ?

Kyle, she's lying about the valiant sacrifices; it's only your what-not that is appreciated by teh wimminz .

And there was me thinking "Oh, a tiger-skin rug in the bedroom - that's nice".
