R.I.P Paul.
Hadn't seen him for about 2 years (since I changed roles at work) but do remember him as a very lively and entertaining speaker at a few of my old Intranet conferences back in 2007/2008.
Will remember him for being the guy who introduced wikis, blogs and this new fangled thing called facebook, not to mention "the semantic web", in his trademark scottish accent to a bunch of internal communications types.

"The People's Referendum on the Super City, and the slightly mysterious Our Auckland group behind it."
Isn't it linked to "The Standard"? I'm sure someone had something to do with the websites all being run off the same servers, same contact details etc (can't remember exact details tho)
-
Apparently the Our Auckland site is being by the same crew who run The Standard... hence the massive bias in the questions.
But of course, in the interests of transparency and accountability, they haven't disclosed that.

"Also... this new imposition that they have to record names/photo Id if they want to re-open the shops... can the police/courts actually do that? It seems like making up new law on the spot? Secondhand dealers and pawn brokers have to record who they buy stuff from, and pharmacists have to record who they sell certain medicines to... but these requirements have been specified in laws passed by parliament."
My thoughts exactly, I guess if its a bail condition and the agreed to it, its fine. I can't see it being applied to other stores legally though.
It reminds me a lot of the police making the rules up as they went along with firearms law, and declaring firearms with thumbhole stocks as MSSAs. This went to court, and the police lost. The cops don't make up or interpret law, they enforce it. They need to be reminded of this.

This guy is nothing, if you want to be disgusted by Mysoginistic, violent rap - check out "Necro" who tours NZ about once a year.
And the really sad part - he has women falling over themselves for him..

The irony is while trying to be funny about mining, you make a valid point about drug legalisation, and the role of the black market economy.
One wonders whether that point (look I made a P reference) is lost on the OP tho..

look forward with interest to Marshall's long awaited expose on the Dihydrogenmonoxide trade.
We've been there, done that - have the OIA request :-P

" Muriel will never get into parliament."
"She was an MP for nine years Mikee."@rich - as they say in israel and on 4chan... never again
;-)

Muriel will never get into parliament. She's just there to keep the old codgers in Northland happy.
Otherwise, she'd be Act's Hone Hariwira....
As an ACT supporter I'm happy to say that she scares the living shit out of me. Trust me, you never want to be in a meeting where she is speaking if you are on a come down (been there, done that, never, ever want to repeat that experience) :-P
