Amazingly, someone has gone through a lot of trouble and money to preserve this sign. It was carefully braced, lifted, and hauled off in one piece this week. To where I do not know.

They are. Over the last week there have been several stories in the Dutch news media about Chinese people buying up large amounts of formula from supermarket shelves over there and shipping it to China.
I don't know the origin of the products targeted, but I would not be surprised if it has "Made in NZ" on it. -
I was thoroughly confused when I turned on the radio and the lead item on RNZ was a long soundbite by the PM about how terrible it was someone I never heard of got beaten up somewhere.
Really media? Is the Prime Minister going to be asked his personal opinion on every instance of violent crime in the country now?

I would add that everyone reading this has a tool on their computer (a web browser) that can provide unauthorized access to a website
But probably most of us don't possess those tools because we intend to commit an offence with it. I would hope that any possession charge would require some proof that committing a crime is the primary reason for possessing the item.

At short exposure, of course each individual shot will only contain a small amount of detail
Ah, but that is where it all goes wrong. A certain minimum amount of light has to fall on a CMOS cell in order to be registered at all, and brightness can only be detected and read back at discrete levels. Each level of brightness requires a certain amount of light.
So if the exposure time is too short, there isn't enough light at any of the pixels to produce any image. And if there is an image, there may not be enough levels of brightness to give anything more interesting than monochrome.

Shifting the image digitally is not going to help with the need for a long exposure. The whole point of a long exposure is to gather enough photons at each pixel to get above the noise floor of the sensor, and get a good range and resolution of intensities.
Getting the content of a CCD or CMOS sensor necessarily clears it. It's not possible to read the image, then continue the exposure. Reading out the sensor every second (for example) in order to shift the image digitally (either in-camera or on the computer) just gets you 8 frames of noise with no signal. Stacking 8 frames of noise only gives you more noise.
If you can shorten the exposure and still get a good but dim image, you could stack several images together. There is some free software to do that specifically for astronomical work, such as RegiStax.
