  • Up Front: Stand for... Something,

Or do away with the fabric all together and make the flag an actual 3D-printed cloud.

I don’t like a predominantly black flag. Colours in national flags are supposed to stand for something, e.g red for strength, white for peace, blue for water and naval prowess. What does black signify about the New Zealand identity?

Also, as a guideline I think a flag should be simple enough that a child can draw it from memory.

  • Speaker: We don’t make the rules, we're…,

One of the issues that bothers me greatly is that by taking action against global mode as a whole, Lightbox et al. are trying to protect its NZ exclusive content by preventing me from accessing content to which it does not have an exclusive license, or any license now or in the likely future.

A business built on exclusivity may well work where it makes the difference between having the product available or not available at all. But when it requires the removal of existing availability in order to become exclusive, then that is hostile to the very people you want to be your customers, and rightly doomed to fail.

  • Hard News: Media Take: The creeping…, in reply to Andrew E,

But it is an access to documents law, not an access to information law

In the age of data journalism, would that be the more desirable approach?

Instead of having someone at a ministry spending time and resources trying to answer how many tire punctures ministerial limousines have had over the last ten years, you are given access to the maintenance records with the understanding that you can figure it out yourself from there.

  • Hard News: The sole party of government, in reply to tussock,

Not to mention the million people in the US with top secret clearance who just saw who you voted for

Given that GCHQ engages in manipulating online polls I think there is a real danger that it can escalate to tweaking an election just a bit to keep certain parties which may prove a bit of a bother to the five eyes or TPPA below the 5% threshold for example.
One or two seats is all it takes to change a bothersome coalition into a single party government.

With any changes to the democratic process, one shouldn't only consider trust and capabilities of today's governments, but also those in 3 years' time, and 20 years.

  • Hard News: The silence of the public square, in reply to Michael Meyers,

I was at the Party Party in Wellington where something similar happened. I was a little disappointed by speech that Dotcom made but mostly because there was no substance to it.

He is more substantive during the current roadtrip (or at least he was in Nelson), talking about technology infrastructure, tertiary education, and moving the economy away from its dependence on traditional primary produce. He also took part in answering many of the questions from the audience about the party and its policies.

To me it seemed that he isn't just the posterboy, but is actively involved in shaping the party.

  • Capture: Getting closer,

    Attachment

Pointed a webcam through the window to capture a sunset. It decided that focusing on the window a centimetre away was more interesting. Can't say I disagree.

  • Hard News: The Future of Television,

I'm wondering how UFB is going to change the dynamics. The typical fibre plan has enough upload speed to send out a decent quality stream from home. More and more TVs, settop boxes, and game consoles are capable of receiving streams from the internet.

What is missing is a local equivalent of something like Ustream to host and aggregate the programs into "TV" channels.

  • OnPoint: The Big Guns: Truecrypt and Tails, in reply to Matthew Poole,

an OTP system where the keying is based on transcription of atmospheric noise

Which works until the adversary finds out that is how the OTP is generated and starts to record the same data and match the ciphertext against it.

  • OnPoint: The Big Guns: Truecrypt and Tails, in reply to Duane Griffin,

Hidden volumes are great, up to a point, but… The interrogating officer may well ask pointed questions

When it comes to that stage, your adversary probably already believes (rightly or wrongly) you have information of interest somewhere. Your options then are to convince them that they are wrong (ha!), produce the data that makes them happy (good luck if you really don't have it), or be prepared for the maximum consequences for holding out (detention for hours/days/indefinite, deportation, torture, being on a powerful government's shitlist for the rest of your life).

Plausible deniability only works if everyone adheres to the innocent until proven guilty principle.
