If I was Nicky Hagar, I'd have backed up all my data securely and in the Cloud. Hopefully he can jump on a new computer and keep working.

  • Up Front: Oh, God,

Probably risking being shot down in flames here, but I have held a sneaky suspicion for some years that the risible remuneration offered to teachers means that only people with a really strong drive enter the profession. Some of these people are those with a genuine vocation to teach, who are prepared to accept a lifetime of near penury. Others are those on a mission - in particular Christians of the born-again variety, who see teaching as an opportunity to share the Good News. My father was a lecturer at Wellington Teachers' College until the mid '90s, and it was extraordinary how many student teachers were fundamentalist Christians.

I'm struggling with 'integration' these days - in the product-placement sense of the word. 360 degree brand integration with content. Sad.

Doing what I enjoy doing most. Directing telefeature Spies & Lies in 2009. The pic was probably taken by Jae Frew, and sums up how I feel about directing - uninhibited, happy and having fun. The green jacket is my lucky directing jacket.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Going Large,

I love music too. For me the difference in appreciation between high resolution recordings and lossy files is akin to the difference between looking at a reproduction of a painting in a book, and taking in the real thing in a gallery.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Going Large, in reply to Russell Brown,

Yes, but I have quite a good destination device! ;-)

It's nice to see that at least a small subset of people care about music quality. Most people I know claim to hear no difference between a compressed file and lossless sound. To me it's like the difference between watching video playback from a VHS tape, and pictures at 4K resolution. If I want to really LISTEN to the music, rather than having it burbling away in the background.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Going Large,

I like the idea of a high-resolution version of iTunes (why can’t iTunes do it? I’d pay a premium), but the Pono device has no appeal for me. At the very least I’d want Airplay capability to stream the music around the house and into my main system via Apple TV.

I aspect the initiative will sink as long as it’s restricted to those clunky devices.
