Huh, the 5.1 at 1.27am failed to wake me! The 5.5 at 5.45 certainly did. Did not like.
What worries me is the migration of activity towards the patch of large active faults further north in Pegasus Bay. Feels like watching a car crash in slow motion.

These are Ornamental or Sea Thistles
Oh, thanks Geoff! I thought there might be some thistleness in there, after I tried to remove one of those shrivelled petals. Ow! :-)

Mass photographers, midnight fireworks
Oh, lovely shot!
Any other Capturazzi in the crowd, do you think? :-)

Apart from the tall and gangly bit, I guess. ;-)
Ah, details! ;-)
I think that's a dahlia. I took a lot of photos of that one's cousins the other day in the Chch Botanic Gardens. Must sort them. Amazing thing about the Gardens - you get whole 360-degree views with no earthquake damage in them - priceless!!

Julie, what a beautiful photo of a beautiful evening! I don't reckon fireworks can top that. :-)
Jake: good old disposable cameras, huh! Well they're lovely, very dreamlike.
Jackie: Happy New Year to YOU, dear lady! xxx
And all PAS folk: you're the best, have a fantastic year. Let's hope this one is memorable for good positive reasons.

Islander, this place is richer for your presence and your stories. I hope you know how much you’re appreciated. And I hope this bright new year has more ease and comfort for you.

Is this a good place to plug Project Crimson? A charitable trust that promotes the conservation and planting of pohutukawa and rata.
As their factsheet states, the natural range of the pohutukawa is the north of the North Island (North from New Plymouth in the west and Gisborne in the east) but they will grow all over the country. Here in Chch there are some fine trees around Sumner. My sister on the coast south of Dunedin has a fine row of them about 15m high. [She also has a kauri planted when I was a kid, that’s in a nice damp sunny spot and is about 10m high, rapidly obscuring the view!]
Pohutukawa is apparently causing trouble in California and South Africa!
