  • Hard News: What's on David Bain's iPod?,

I'm totally turned off by all things Bain-related right now. If he's innocent, leave the poor guy alone. If not, he's getting undeserved fawning. Either way I don't want to know.

Apropos the long-format interview show: I would have to start a television habit again. I rarely watch television at all these days, and I actively avoid the so-called news (the "journalists" vapid mugging and the emotional porn content cause me to shout at the screen in a deranged manner). Thus my delicate mind has been happily undisturbed by the TV coverage of the Bain case. I simply couldn't give a toss what TV has to show.

Since this is the internet, I'm going to generalise wildly from my own feelings: I suspect that whatever potential audience there is for high-brow current affairs has probably abandoned TV altogether in favour of other media.

I mean: all together now. Jeez I'm becoming illiterate these days.

Altogether now: I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

Although I'm not sure what "it" is any more.

  • Hard News: Claims,

I've been reading recently about the role of Matt Drudge in the US news media. In many ways his role is to parcel up bullshit into something that looks like a story, and then the "respectable" media can report on his report -- and so a story can be built up out of very little.

I actually thought David was quoting Uli, otherwise I would have stuck to English. But anyway, in subsequent correspondence David has kindly invited my to use the informal mode of address :)

The problem with scooters and tuktuks is that they generally have two-stroke engines with a very dirty exhaust as far as particulates go - as bad as a car, even though their engines are so much smaller.

No doubt some engineering love could go a long way there too.

Why no denials? I'll tell you why. It's the LBJ principle.

Oh dear, I read the transcript too fast, and didn't notice that David had already clarified Uli's meaning.

I don't know whether I'm adressing David or Uli here, but:

Das englische 'consequent' ist eine wörtliche Übersetzung [...] ich bin nun ein wenig verwirrt, was ich verkehrt gemacht haben soll.

Normalerweise uebersetzt man d. "konsequent" mit e."consistent" und e."consequent" mit d. "darauffolgend".

"Our design is consequent" klingt also unidiomatisch irgendwie "unsere Konstruction ist darauffolgend" - ein etwas seltsame Ausdruck.

Ich wollte nur klarmachen, dass Sie "konsequent" gemeint haben, und hatte gar nicht die Absicht zu kritisieren, besonders da ich nur so mieses Deutsch schreiben kann.

"Konsequent" is usually translated as "consistent".or "rigorous". It's a classic false friend.

  • Cracker: LOL,

I dunno. Comedy, like music, requires constant honing in performance to get really right - in fact more, I think. And there are some fans who do want to hear the same thing again and again. That's what an old favourite is.
