Not that I'm panicking but is anywhere in NZ safe? Didn't I hear Northland with its sandstone foundation would be safe .

Hard News: Christchurch: Is "quite good"…, in reply to
Thats true about Wellington but I'd like to think their buildings are earthquake proof just because they get so many reminders that they on on the fault line but ...
Auckland will be a doosie though when Rangitoto fires up , bang there goes the Sky Tower and the casino will be buried under a mile of ash.
Hard to volcano proof buildings . -

Honestly, I’m kind of sick of non-Cantabrians complaining about their insurance premiums
Fair enough but I was just pointing out the ChCh quake has affected us all, insurance and govt spending are just a couple of lines.
And yes those living in the post quake mess are deeply affected and I feel for them but its a New Zealand problem and it will be solved by all of us.
Islander's point about where the city is placed is sure, out there, but if I understood her its a concern about the next natural calamity.
Will the new ChCh be robust enough to survive another earthquake or maybe a big flood. I am not sure NZ can take another hit like this. -

.... just in case the post was misunderstood,NOTHING
will be reinvested into the Government-driven scheme for THEIR rebuilding of ChChCh…. There are much better places to rebuild Otautahi – which was a temporary river & seasonal camp. Get out of the flood plain – go into the foothills – otherwise,
grief IS assurred.I'd like to hear more on this Islander .
First point - the ChCh rebuild is being funded by all New Zealand , and we have all taken a hit on insurance premiums because of the earthquake damage.
I lived in ChCh for year way back in 2002 so cannot claim any whenua but the rebuild does affect us all.In the time I did live in ChCh much as I loved the country, the hills, the uplifting sight of snow covered alps every winters day I did run into the oldboys network.
I found it almost impossible to get work in ChCh identified as an Aucklander until in desperation I called myself an Auckland refugee. My pakeha family name was not on the first four ships and therefore for example I could not get my marriage celebrant's license until I moved back to Auckland.ChCh does have its tight "old" money parochial networks and it does have an underbelly.
Was this this new city focused design influenced by any of that? -
Where will the red light district be?
I seem to remember Christchurch had the highest number of massage parlors per head of population in NZ. -
Hard News: John Banks: The volunteer did…, in reply to
that somewhat embittered response to sophism
I had to look up sophism - " a specious argument used for deceiving someone"
then I had to look up specious - "strongly held but false"
That's two new words I learned today!
That's what I love about Public Address, its so.... educational . -
Its bollocks. In saying he just accepted the word of a volunteer that the return was accurate shows how little respect he had for transparency. Hell I bet he doesn't do that with his expenses. If he really respected the idea of electoral transparency he would have made sure his return was accurate, its not as if he had thousands of donations to check.
As Craig says the Electoral Commission needs some teeth or at least to get a bit of mongrel in them. Everyone is just being too damn polite.

Mostly a trial establishes who was responsible
Thanks Steve and Graeme for the clarification. Hey I am no lawyer but it just seems odd to me that a Coroner's inquest can produce conclusions that challenge those found in a trial but after the fact. I don't understand the thinking behind this.
-
Wow !
And why did the coroner's inquest lag so far behind the trial ?
If the coroner''s finding we published before or during the trial would that have made a difference? -
Russell's outline of the risks of MDPV got me to thinking around the importance of having real and unbiased information on drugs, especially recreational drugs.
Wouldn't be very helpful to have a web site sharing lots of people's experiences and info on the wide range of stuff out there now?
There is plenty in this space for legal psych medications , Drug Watch and for the wider range of medications Ask a Patient. The legal prohibition approach really doesn't help inform those with a skeptical view of the government and medical fraternity's opinions.
Remember Woodstock and the Brown Acid warning . How about that approach from thousands via the web?
