Anybody notice that the company that bought Telecom's directory business are outsourcing 018 to the Philipines? And did you know they've already put the price up to 50 cents?
I'd love to invest in those guys. They have a genuine monopoly and unrestricted pricing power (up to whatever sum you'd pay if you really needed a number). That's what I call a franchise.
How did we let an important if small service like directory escape like this? (Yes that was a rhetorical question, I understand the process quite well).

In my occasional bogan moments I crank up Shihad's "fish" album.
I was in a particularly dark space in my UK exile and Home Again evokes all the panic of the failing long-distance relationship for me.

Properly cured earth walls are going to stand up better than an NZ weatherboard house, that's for sure. Although they have a distressing tendency to collapse in earthquakes.

Hamilton in the late 80s boasted a punk band called Hitler's Cock.

I/O, that sums up one of my great fears about this whole business very well.

David: try the Fundy Post.

I heard Derek Fox say "nigger in the woodpile" on National Radio today. Funnily enough for this thread, it was in reference to the terror raids, specifically wondering why we hadn't heard about the police officer who directed the raids.
It took me by surprise, I can tell you.

I realise I must have a filthy mind, because when I read the post title I assumed Russell was going to link to this. (Quite SFW, if you're wondering).

I have never heard "touch of the tar brush" used in any NZ context. I think of it as old American and even older British usage. It's not part of my working vocab and I can confidently say there is no crossover in my mind.
I would have suspected "tarring with the same brush" is a nautical term from the days of wooden ships, but here is a claim that it's of farming origin.
